Featured Design: Double Ribbon Washer Necklace

Meet Becca, a wife, a mother of three and the creative mind behind Blue Cricket Design. She has made her blogging, a way to enjoy the days in her pajama and being with family. She loves crafts from sewing, to refurnishing furniture, to baking and being in the kitchen, and making jewelries. Becca has her own style that makes her crafts and she herself, different, which she totally loves.

In our previous posts on washer jewelries, we have featured how to make washer necklace and that was a cool stuff, but here is Becca’s own version of a washer necklace.

I think with Becca’s idea, we can use different colors of ribbons and laces, and tie them all together. We can use the color of the ribbon or necklace to go with our outfit, don’t you think? I bet this would also look good using a slimmer size of leather cord.

Can’t wait to try it out? Head over to Blue Cricket Design. Becca has shared a video tutorial on how to make the Double Ribbon Washer Necklace.

If you’ve missed our previous washer necklace feature tutorials here’s the link to revisit the post.

Things that make me go whoo

Hi hi... I have not been featuring any artist lately... Today, I would like to introduce Shirley van der Veldt from Things that make me go whoo.

She is one artist who can turn sea life, trees and flowers into jewelries! Here is a collection of her designs:

Seaweed pendant with 3 freshwater pearls:

Tree Fruit Pendant:

The inspiration to this pendant came from the fruit of the Brachychiton populneus tree

The metal bracelet is end of the year project of her metal smiting course, the subject was
love and idea was to make a corset like the girls get from their prom date. According to Shirley,it was a tricky piece to make. The original idea was different but in practice it didn’t really work. Together with her teacher she had to think of a different approach to make it work.
She has made a prototype from polymer clay.

Amaze with her designs? Read on to get to know her better here:

Tell us yourself!
My name is Shirley van der Veldt. For the last two years I am living in Israel, my home country, after 8 years in the Netherlands. I am a web designer.

How did you start doing jewelry (or beadmaking) as a business?
After giving birth to Mya my oldest child, I decided not to go back to the office life and wanted to
spend as much time as I can with my kids. This is why I started making jewelry and doing some
freelance web designing. I like to imagine myself as a studio owner with 6 other employees
but for now my goal is to make a living from making art and the trick is to find the balance
between marketing your pieces and still have the time to make it, I am still looking for this
balance. Lately I find myself spending much more time on the web than actually producing..
Last year I started taking metal smiting lessons which turned to be my second big passion
(after polymer clay) and now I am trying to combine the two in my work, though I find working
with metal at home a bit more challenging. I am a bit scared to use the torch in the house (my
working space is in the corner of our dinning area).

Every artist has a personal "creative process", can you explain yours?
Finding time to create is a big challenge for me it is kind of joggling between the kids,
maintaining the house and working but what can I say my house is not always shiny and tidy as
I would like it to be if I want to keep on working. I collect every photo that I like on the web and
from magazines so I have a huge picture collection for inspiration. Usually I start with a sketch
I have a thick sketch book and I try to put my ideas first on paper, it takes a while before I dare
to realize the idea. I need to run it in my head for a few days, but then I start to work. Most of the time the end result turns out completely different then the original idea.

When people start doing jewelry, they tend to try a lot of different things before
settling down to something that resonates with them, tell us how has your jewelry work changed since you began?
I was introduced to Fimo when I was 6. Since then I tried a lot of different mediums and in the
end I came back to the clay that’s where I feel home. It took me a while to get my own style,
for many years I have been busy learning a lot of different techniques. The last two years
were tough years in my personal life but those were also the years when I experienced a
breakthrough and I finally got loose creative wise and started to express myself.
It’s true what they say that art comes from suffering.

If you teach, where will you be teaching this year?
At the moment I am busy promoting my new workshops at the moment only here in Israel. I
am teaching the millefiori technique for beginners and advanced. Millefiori technique involves
the production of polymer canes, with multicolored patterns which are viewable only from the
cut ends of the cane. The canes are being reduced until thin while still maintaining the cross
section's design, and then cut into beads or discs when cooled.

Where can we find you?

Shirley, thanks for the sharing! All the best to your business.

Lace is sexy, they say. Laces are usually used in lingerie apparels and bridal gowns but are rarely used on jewelry. For those fashion enthusiasts, anything and everything around is a potential material for a good art piece.

These one of a kind pendants is created by Dishfunctional Designs. It feature snips of delicate antique lace sandwiched between glass and accented with a coordinating Swarovski crystal.

Another website that I found features wearable art made out of laces. Radmila Zuman took inspiration from the natives of Czechoslovakia, the Netherlands, Canada, Belgium, Germany, Holland, Australia, England and Slovakia and added a zest of her own style. According to her website, she admires the skills of a lace maker who made the laces she loves to collect. She taught lace making for more than 25 years and has had many exhibitions of her creations, a number of awards and has published a couple of books about lace making.
Her collection includes lapel pins, necklaces, bracelets, pendants and hats. Here are some of the examples:

Let's meet Patricia Palotas!

The picture above is featuring one of the jewelry creations- The Pink Ruby in 14k Gold filled wire with CZ accent Pendant, created by Patricia which is so beautifully crafted!

Here is a short interview with Patricia:

Tell us about you:
After my accident, I had to find something to peak my interest - to keep up my energy and zest. As my late father was and my son is an artist, it seemed natural for me to turn to art. I paint with acrylics and have sold many canvas paintings, and continue to paint - however, soon after I took up jewelry creation it became my passion.

Designing a pendant around a beautiful cabochon or faceted gemstone takes time and an artistic eye as I measure, sketch and calculate the amount and type of metal wire I'll be using. Then I cut, twist, twirl, swirl, cold connect, hammer and sculpt the precious metal wire over, under and around the gemstone or cabochon until I reach the final look. The piece then gets hand sanded to remove any sharp edges and polished to a high shine. This same labor of love is undertaken with my bracelets and earrings.

Tell us about The Pink Ruby in 14k Gold filled wire with CZ accent Pendant
I was so delighted with the arrival and the beauty of this nearly 6 carat slightly translucent Pink African Ruby I started on my design that very day. It was just so pretty. Hand crafted in soothing 14k gold filled wire, I gave it just a bit of an accent with a clear diamond simulant - a cubic zirconium. The finished pendant hangs balanced, is a size suitable for day or evening wear and is sturdy enough to wear every day.

I am proud to say, I have never had a returned item nor a dissatisfied customer. Thank you for taking interest in my jewelry.

Thanks Patricia for the interview. I have also found some other beautiful pendants from Patricia's gallery:

There are just too many beautiful designs created by Patricia. I suggest you guys go to her etsy shop or her website to take a look. It is just amazing!

Silver Spiral cuff

See what i've found! I would like to introduce you guys to metalwork - This spiral cuff by The Silver Swann!

This spiral cuff is delicate, thin, yet flexible enough to conform to the shape of your wrist. Made entirely from sterling silver.

The spirals are shaped out of silver wire. After painstakingly placing each coil next to each other to form a flat version of the cuff, The Silver Swann soldered each coil together until it is one solid piece. she then take a mandrel and hammer out the cuff shape, clean it with silver pickle, sand out any scratches by hand, and tumble with stainless steel shots until the bracelet is shiny and "work-hardened".

You can request for custom made of this bracelet, just go to her shop: http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?listing_id=38995527

Cheers

Jewelry made of hardware (Part 1)

3

Have you ever wonder this beautifu jewelry is made of items which we can get from our hardware store?

Let me introduce you to Holly Bar, a New Zealand based artist and the creator ofZesTee Fashion online shop http://www.zesteefashion.com/ who created this piece!

Holly Bar makes one-of-a-kind jewelry made with non-traditional materials from the hardware store, such as washers, nuts and other interesting materials, making them unique and original pieces of art. All the jewelry is done by her and each piece is one-of-a-kind, so one can rest assured that no one else will have the same item.

Holly Bar love making hardware jewelry because there are a big variety of hardware items that enable me to be creative and original in her work. With her hardware jewelry she likes taking “ordinary” and “simple” items such as hardware, and take them to a different direction. Not many people think you can wear hardware bits and pieces around your neck, but she loves to prove them that you can create from hardware something beautiful to wear. It enables her to be creative and original in her work. She like making unique jewelry that no one else has. It’s
something different that makes you stand out from the crowd.

When doing hardware jewelry she discovered the color combination of silver and gold together in one piece. Each color enhances the other and gives more interest to the jewelry.

Wine Country From Jewelry Tales

Wow... don't you think that this creation is so extraordinary?

Do you consider it a bracelet? It is much more than that. According to Cynthia, it is a bracelet with rings attached and it's Cynthia's interpretation of a hand flower bracelet. This creation simply seems to have redefine what a bracelet or a ring is. By thinking outside the box, jewelry can really be transformed to any shape and design. Read about this creative design from Jewelrytales! Interestingly, the creation comes with a 'story'. Click here to read more!

Allure Pendant By Colette Collection

Let me introduce you to Allure Pendant from a very talented artist Colette Kimon! This beautiful Onyx pendant was wire wrapped with various gauges of sterling silver wire. The black against the sterling silver is absolutely beautiful and elegant!

Colette became interested in jewelry making in 2004 while she was unemployed. She started with beaded jewelry and quickly became fascinated with wire wrapping, and she hasn't stopped since then. She has bought countless books, tutorials, wire magzines in her quest to learning. She is mostly self taught, and love learning something new every day.

The design started with a beautiful onyx cabochon. She wanted to wrap it in a way that was a little unusual without hiding too much of the beautiful stone. What she had in mind was to graciously weave the wire around the stone, like a natural flow of water. Colette used wire wrapping and figure 8 wire weaving technique to come up with this beautiful design. I must say the cleverly designed jewelry is of great workmanship and brings out the best of the stone!

Yesterday's Newspaper Is Today's Jewelry

While surfing the net to find some good cliparts, I was distracted when I bumped into http://www.newspaperjewelry.com/! I browse thru a few designs and am amazed how the artist recycled newspaper into beautiful jewerly. Picture above is a bracelet made of Recycled Newspaper Comic Strips with Swarovski Crystal and Faceted Glass Trim.

The website is run by Holly Anne Mitchell who has her Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree from The University of Michigan. She had a project to create a piece of jewelry without using any traditional materials: no metal, precious/semi-precious stones, etc. She chose Newspaper because of the Bright Colors and Rich Textural Patterns of the Sunday Comics. The idea stuck with her and she has been creating Newspaper Jewelry ever since!

Holly Anne has received several awards and her artwork has been featured in numerous publications including The Boston Globe, Art & Antiques, The Washington Post, The Washington Times, Ornament, Mary Engelbreit Home Companion and The Baltimore Sun. She has also been profiled in a recent episode of The Food Network Series "Unwrapped".

This bracelet made with California losing lottery tickets is called Shattered Dreams. . . .
and wearing recycled paper jewelry to lessen one's eco-footprint would be appropriate in either case.
Kudos to Holy Anne as she has done a great job by using her creativity to turn recycled papers to jewelry. Great work for preserving our earth!
