My Creative Space...a day late

I have been working on my Artbeads.com Designing Partner piece and as you can tell from the colors will definitely reflect the "Summer" theme. The necklace will be asymmetrical in nature. Here I am working on one side of the necklace. I am absolutely loving working with the vintage beads that came with the mix. So retro!

I'm hoping to have the piece completed by the end of the weekend. Although time has not quite been on my side this week, it is a long weekend and the kids left for a 5 day out-of-town vacation a day early last night, so I am hoping to make up on some time while they are gone. Working when they are away helps keep my mind off the fact that they ARE gone. I miss them so much. They are just glad they got out of school a day early!

My Creative Space

Another lovely stash from Artbeads.com! This time's design challenge? Summertime!
I simply can't wait for summertime and thank goodness, it is finally looming on us! I chose some glass pearls in emeralds and blues, Czech glass beads in green Picasso, a mix of blue glass Czech beads and a bunch of vintage white beads. Add to that a cool brass chain, several gold tone seashore charms and a toggle to match.

I have been playing with designs in my sketchbook for a couple days and haven't really decided which direction I will be taking this. I am tending more towards asymmetrical necklace. However, every time I try to plan a piece and do multiple sketches, it always takes on a life of it's own and becomes something not planned! Why do I bother sketching?!

Monday Moodboard: Queen Anne's Lace

Can you tell I was doing some gardening over the weekend and can't wait for the Queen Anne's Lace to come up?!

Still have to sew Paige's cover. I don't dare do it now (annoying cyclical waist-expansion), so I need to wait a few more days. Probably over the weekend next weekend. Paige anxiously awaits in the living room for me to dress her!

Still working on the bloomers! I love this project because it is a ME project. Just for me. Sure, I will use the pattern to make more for my shop, but these are for me :)

Speaking of pattern, I finally decided on a dressform. It is already ordered and I am just waiting for it to come. It is a Uniquely You Dressform. Way better than those nothing more than a plastic shell dressforms. This one is solid foam rubber! Can't wait to get it! Thanks for all your advice and comments :)

It took me about 4 hours to make the pattern from a drawing and cut the fabric out. Hubby couldn't believe it took so long. I told him that it is another case why I need the dressform! Without one, I have to keep measuring and pinning on myself which can be quite difficult.

And, of course, I had to sew the detail work before I could start piecing it together. I am now finally piecing in the evenings. I'll keep you posted on how it all turns out!

My Creative Space

My Creative Space this week is sort of a pre-creative space. Running low on great antique buttons for jewerly, I have been spending the week going through my personal collection to take buttons I really don't need. I guess that is a sign that I should acquire some new buttons for my work collection!

I keep the pictoral buttons separated according to the National Button Society classification guide. I keep 4 major collections: plant life, animal life, pictoral objects and misc. pictorial. Above is a few cards from my personal plant life collection. Showing is a card of various identified flowers and a card of pansies (one of my favorites!). I should actually share some of my buttons with you on the blog...great idea for weekend posts!

Happy Thursday :)

I'm embarrassed to say that last weeks beading project is still on the bead board. That's the problem with working out new designs: just when you think you figured it out, you find another improvement and have to start all over!

So, I'll take you to my evening projects: Tunisian Crochet. Since my severe focal hand dystonia prevents me from knitting, Tunisian crochet is basically knitting on a crochet hook. It is believed that Tunisian crochet originates in either North Africa or the Near East. I started learning this technique a month and a half ago and the blue sample in the picture is the first "Perfect" sample I have created yet. It is a real difficult stitch to learn, but when you get it, it's worth the time it takes for the learning process!

This particular stitch literally resembles knitting, from the "v" shaped stitches in the front to the "perl" in the back. I am so glad I can knit now without hurting my hands!

Currently on the bead board is a whole new design, inspired by Victorian jewelry fashions, of course! Quite a tedious process as there are many components to beadweave, but I'm sure the results will be fabulous!

As you can tell, the images are not very good (funny coming from the one posting photography tutorials!) Unfortunately, my studio is in the north end of the house with tiny little windows...doesn't make for very good photography light. I do have a swing-arm halogen lamp that swings over my work area which makes for some bright beading, however, it doesn't do much for my pictures! :) My cream-colored beading pad doesn't help much as it casts a yellow tone on everything. I'm still looking for a replacement that will fit my irregular space.

Coming up next on the bead board will be a sweet little wire worked bracelet with beaded components. Another tedious, but pleasurable, beading session. So now that you have the sneak peak at the pieces, hopefully next week I will be able to show it in progress on the bead board.

My dear friend, Duni from Lovely Purses has tagged me, so now you get the spill on a bunch of useless information about me that almost crosses the line of stalker-dome! But it's fun, so here goes:

Your hair burgundy.

Your favorite food anything Bavarian!

Your favorite drink any peppermint tea blend (Stash tea has such an incredible variety).

Your dream/goal to keep working my business successfully until God takes away the use of my hands.

Your hobby collecting books, reading and researching World War II.

Your fear attending the funeral of one of my children (It's a Meyerhoefer curse - my generation hasn't seen theirs yet).

Where were you last night watching Jawbreaker with my daughter, then retreat to the bedroom to finish reading C.S. Lewis's The Screwtape Letters.

Something you say all the time "Really? REALLY?"

Something you are not miserable.

Wishlist item Nikon D700 DSLR camera (yea, right!).

Last thing you did drop my kids off at school - the roads were terrible!

What are you wearing grey Aero comfy pants, black and grey Fair Isle sweater, fuzzy comfy socks. Yup, I work in comfortable clothes!

Your pets Herr Lukas (dog), Miss PennyKat (obviously kitty), Bruce (columbian shark), and the crowd in the saltwater tank: P. Jammie (pajama cardinal), Tiny (pajama cardinal), Tony (black clown fish - his wife Anne the orange clown fish died this summer), Prince William (royal gamma), My Brother Darryl (blue chromis - Other Brother Darryl died this summer) and finally Benny (engineer goby) and the Jets (the crabs and shrimps).

Friends lots of them all over the world! Very few local super-close ones :)

Missing someone my brother Gregg - died of melanoma cancer in 2005.

Something you're not wearing ummmm shoes?

Your favorite store any fabric, beading or metals supply store.

Your favorite color
black and yellow.

The last time you cried My step-son's (Dave) father's funeral just before Christmas. Dave's parents had him late in life, so they are much older. His father was sick, but beat so many things that the doctors never thought he would. At the funeral, he gave a little speech in which his last sentence will forever be ingrained in my memory: "...and now I'm left dealing with something I thought would never happen."

The last time you laughed watching Jawbreaker with my daughter last night. If you did not see this movie, you absolutely have to! Wickedly funny (stupid catty high-school betches!).

One place that you go to over and over either my studio or my library.

Where do you eat at home. I hate eating out...everyone puts garlic in everything and I'm allergic to garlic!

So, there you have it...more info about me than you probably wanted to know!
Too keep it in the spirit, I'm passing this on to four blog friends:

Tag, You're It!

My dear friend, Jewelled Trellis, tagged me! When you get tagged, you tell the world 10 things about yourself. This is such a great way to get to know outstanding artisans. Some of my favorites are at the bottom. If you appear there, you have been tagged! Either way, give them a visit to see why they are my favorites!

1) I own my business, work from my home studios (yup, got more than one...what can I say? I need space!), I'm a mother to two teenagers and one young adult, step-mother to three young adults and "Granny" to three little ones who are my step-daughter's kids.

2) I was born and raised in upstate New York and have hated it all my life. The warmth and the ocean calls me every year. I get cold in temps less than 75 degrees!

3) I, too, suffer multiple artisan disorder. I began selling my oil paintings at craft shows right after I graduated high school in 1985. At the same time, I was messing around with beading and began showing them several years later. I have been known to make and sell everything from stuffed animals to hand quilted quilts to papier mache items in addition to artwork and jewelry.

4) I have focal hand dystonia that affects my hands and forearms. Basically what happens is that my brain sends signals to my hands and forearms to painfully spasm while I am doing certain tasks (holding the phone, writing, driving, holding a book while reading, stringing beads, crocheting, knitting and hand sewing mainly). I have learned to create using techniques that do not aggravate the dystonia because I REFUSE to let it get in the way of my business.

5) I fell in love with buttons at 8 years old. We would visit my Grandma Meyerhoefer every weekend, who was very poor raising 9 children alone as Grandpa died early from stomach cancer. She didn't have toys for me to play with, so she would pull out her button tin for me to go through. I loved running my fingers through them, sorting them, etc. Now, buttons take me back to Grandma's. The buttons I use in my jewelry cannot be found in button tins, however. I get them from antique button auctions! Yes, they really do exist!

6) I have a degree in NeuroPsychology, minored in biology and Fine Arts. Why am I not a neuropsychologist? I couldn't afford to finish the Doctorate :( Maybe someday.

7) My family room is slowly becoming my library. I adore books and reading. I get most of my books free from BookMooch. Check them out if you love to read!

8) I have been an entrepreneur since a child. I had regular yard sales (with my stuff) and lemon aid/ice tea stands. When I was 10, I made candy and took them around the neighborhood to sell to the neighbors. Several years later, I would sell my crafts at my yard sales, not that the crafts sold very well, but I loved doing it.

9) I have a deep interest in World War II and have been studying it for probably 15 years. I read everything I can get my hands on!

10) I am an avid gardener and my dream is to have 50% of my property consisting of gardens. So far, I am probably at 20%. Every year, I put a new garden in. Presently, I have a huge memory garden, a frog pond garden, my vegetable garden, the back patio garden, the Japanese garden, rose garden and a small walkway garden in the front. Oh, and another kidney garden by the road. Next year, I will be putting in a native garden.

Now, I am tagging (in no particular order):

1) The Ad Master - great online marketing info.
2) The Queen Speaks - Katherine keeps me in stitches!
3) WillOaks Studio - beautiful gardens and such...
4) KitchenRetro - crazy ads from the past...
5) EntrePod - Mama ASID has spoken...
6) Lovely Purses - Duni's great creations among other things...
7) KreatedByKelly - fellow button lover...her stuff looks like candy!
8) Les Bijoux Crea-Lune - she has an art with stones I simply do not have!
9) Pink Pooch Designs - amazing bracelets!
10) Originals By Terri - yummy jewelry...and she has a giveaway going on right now!

Wow...that was so hard to narrow that down to 10!
