Friday's Featured Artist - Yarrow1

I've been hanging out with some new gals (Bittersweets Daily Challenge) lately - and they are delightful! I met them because of a team mate of mine on Team
Big Damn Crafters and so I decided to feature her! I'd like you all to meet Karen...

1. What type of art work do you do?

I have done and am doing a lot of things in art. I have a piece in bronze. I just did a mural on a winery. I have done them both on inside walls and outside on homes. In addition I am always involved working with pen and ink, acrylics, watercolors and other media doing cards and ACEOs and paintings. I paint tiles, t-shirts and quilting blocks. There have been a lot of wine bottles painted with enamel and donated to charity. I have even had those bottles stolen; that gives me a troubled sense of "arriving" in the art world. lol

2. How did you get started doing art work?

I was influenced by sitting on my uncle's knee and watching him draw. My learning crochet; when I was 7 and had Rhuematic Fever, was taught by a kindly neighbor. My sculpting was at the same time, given clay be a home teacher. I have never stopped since then, but gotten "off track" by jobs.

3. Do you do any other crafts?

I occasionally do ceramics, soaps, lotions, and salts because of jobs I learned them in.

4. Is there a story behind your shop name?

The name is a healing herb. I am a healer using massage, energy and herbs for healing my animals.

5. What's your favorite piece in your shop right now?

The gourd using my horses mane and wood burning. My horse was 33 years of age.
bird gourd Native American

6. Where do you sell your work?

I sell my work at the winery, Vista Del Rey. The owners are very supportive of artists.

I'm also on etsy as Yarrow1.

7. Do you blog?

No.

8. Are you on any social networks you'd like to share?

9. Do you watch or listen to anything while you
work? If so, what?

Public radio, it gives me both news and music of all kinds. I also listen to books gotten from the library.

10. Tell us one random fact about your self *wink*

I hate housework!

I do too! It soooo gets in the way of creating! LOL

Featuring the Fab Miss B!!!

I know - I'm a day late on my Friday Featured Artist - but yesterday was a bad day - and I didn't want to risk completely skipping such a fabulous artist! Becky is also our Featured Etsy Blogger of the Month :D

1. What type of art work do you do?

I create Pipettes! They were inspired by vintage ornaments I've collected for ages. They are made with humble chenille pipe cleaners, but I add lots of luxe embellishments like silk ribbons, antique lace, mother of pearl buttons, feathers, sequins and vintage costume jewelery. Their heads are all carefully hand painted too.

I also love to paint and am constantly making new illustrations, which I sell as prints and greeting cards. The originals are watercolor and ink and they are always whimsical and even a bit silly!

2. How did you get started doing art work?

Ever since I was little, I loved to draw and make things with my hands. The Pipettes originated when I decided to make a pipe cleaner bride and groom for our wedding cake three years ago. I've been making them ever since and they've gone through lots of changes! They've become more elaborate and sophisticated.
3. Do you do any other crafts?

I was trained as a florist while I lived in Chicago, so here and there I dabble in making floral corsages and crowns. I just outfitted an entire wedding party for a dear friend! I also like to cook and take photographs.

4. Is there a story behind your shop name?

My husband and I love to travel and are lucky to have lived all over the world- Kenya, Uganda, China, Chicago, Las Vegas, and now we're trying out life on an island- The Big Island of Hawaii!

We adopted our funny last name- Kazana- while traveling in Africa just after getting married. It's a Swahili word that means "To make a home" and it reminds us that our home is where the other is.

5. What's your favorite piece in your shop right now?

I'm madly in love with Daschshunds- someday I'd love to have a whole gaggle of them running around a farm. But for now, hanging Daisy on my Christmas tree is as close as I can get!

6. Where do you sell your work?
I have two shops on etsy. One for my original Chenille Pipette Dolls and artwork:

and one for Vintage and One of a Kind Finds:

7. Do you blog?

I blog about the inspiration I find around me every day on The Fab Miss B:

Swing by and say hello! I love to meet new folks!

8. Are you on any social networks you'd like to share?

Let's be friends! Here is my Facebook page: http://www.facebook.com/people/Becky-Larson/1047722678

9. Do you watch or listen to anything while you work? If so, what?

I love listening to music while I work. I often use Pandora radio (http://www.pandora.com), where you can create stations based on your musical preferences. Right now I'm listening to Julie London Radio non-stop. I can't help but create glamorous Pipettes when listening to all those amazing chanteuses from the 40's, 50's and 60's.

10. Tell us one random fact about your self *wink*

I adore champagne and never save it for special occasions. It's far too wonderful for that!

Featuring Angleque Creations

Hey guys! It's time for Friday's Featured Artist again! This time I'd like to introduce you to a team mate of mine from the Etsy Bead Weavers. She contacted me about featuring me (thanks!) so I jumped at the opportunity to interview her in return. I'm so glad I did! I learned a lot about her, including that I need to stop complaining about not having enough space in my one bedroom apartment, I don't know how this woman does it, but you'll have to read on to find out what I mean! Click on any of the pictures to be taken to the listings!

1. What type of art work do you do?

I make jewelry from beads, shells, semi-precious stones, and Swarvoski crystals. I have also dabbled a little into wire wrapped jewelry.

2. How did you get started doing art work?

While I was working in Vancouver, BC I started making stretch bracelets for family and friends as presents. Last August my husband and I sailed our sailboat Angelique of Vancouver to La Paz, Mexico and I met a lady on Cetacian who had been beading for 25 years and she made amazing jewelry. She was my inspiration and taught me my first woven stitch the double helix. I was hooked and since learned a number of other weaves from the internet, books and looking at other artists work. I have only been bead weaving for the past 6 months since we got back with our boat to Vancouver.

3. Do you do any other crafts?

I cross stitch, knit and crochet, all these can be done in a small space as I live on my sailboat Angelique of Vancouver. Currently docked at Heather Civic Marina in False Creek, Vancouver BC.

4. Is there a story behind your shop name?

Yes, Angelque Creations is a hybrid of our boat name Angelique of Vancouver. My husband was setting up our cruising email address and misspelled the name hence we became Angelque for all our communications while away on our 10 month cruise. When I was looking for a name for the shop is was just natural that I use the hybrid boat name Angelque because I was inspired to create jewelry while in the Sea of Cortez.

5. What's your favorite piece in your shop right now?

My favorite piece currently in my shop is Sunlight Reflected (Raw) bracelet. I miss the warmth and sunshine from the Sea of Cortez. All my new friends that I met while on our trip have returned and are now heading further south. I wish that I was still with them, but circumstances changed for us and my husband Mike needed to go back to work.

6. Where do you sell your work?

I have an on line shop http://www.angelquecreations.etsy.com. and a web site http://www.angelquecreations.ca, and blogspot http://www.angelquecreation.blogspot.com. I have also set up at the Abbotsford Farmers Market in Abbbotsford, BC, Simon Fraser University, British Columbia Institute of Technology. I will be at the Make It Vancouver show Nov 20-22 at the Croation Cultural Center, 3250 Commercial Drive, Vancouver.

7. Do you blog?

8. Are you on any social networks you'd like to share?

I am part of Etsy and the Etsy
Beadweavers Street Team as well as FFEST. I follow an number of blogs from artist of both these groups.

9. Do you watch or listen to anything while you work?

If so, what? JR FM9370, I am a country music fan.

10. Tell us one random fact about your self *wink*.

Mike and I have lived on our 34 foot sailboat for 16 years in about 200 square feet of space. You can guess it we are very good friends. Visit http://www.angelque.ca for details about our sailing adventure to Mexico and the Sea of Cortez.

Friday's Featured Artist - Aquariann

I don't remember when I first stumbled across Aquariann's shop - but I instantly fell in love! Not only does she do fantasty work, but she uses bright colors that are to die for :) Now to let you get to know her a little bit for yourself...

1. What type of art work do you do?

My style is very inspired by comic books and animation, so I use Pigma Microns by Sakura to line my work and Prismacolor pencils to color it in. Almost every thing I draw has pointy ears or wings or both, so I'm comfortable using the term "fantasy art."

2. How did you get started doing art work?

I've wanted to be a writer for as long as I can remember, and art just came along for the ride and kind of borrowed the wheel. In elementary school, my friends and I used to make up hordes of characters to write into a young adult series. However, I spent way more time drawing the characters and their situations than actually writing about them - a realization that occurred to me much later. It wasn't until college that it dawned on
me to seriously try drawing - thanks to a new addiction to anime and comic books, the discovery of modern fantasy artists such as Amy Brown and Jessica Galbreth, and many art history classes where I got to drool over the beauty of 10,000 years of work.

3. Do you do any other crafts?

I can knit a mean rectangle. Someday I may try to advance my skills past the basic stitch, but right now I'm happy knitting scarves, cozies and arm cuffs. It gives me a reason to continue to buy mounds of pretty yarn I don't need. Plus, it helps me feel more productive instead of simply watching tv.

4. Is there a story behind your shop name?

Aquariann is a combination of my sun sign and middle name. It's become my sexier, more exciting alter ego.

5. What's your favorite piece in your shop right now?

That would have to be Mimi Lu, my most recent drawing! (http://www.artfire.com/modules.php?name=Shop&op=listing&product_id=417457) Who couldn't adore her sweet toy poodle face? My friend occasionally brings her over to play at work and I couldn't resist pulling out my wand and turning her into a fairy as a gift. It's the first time I've done a pet portrait, and I hope to do many more - starting with my miniature schnauzer Coca Monsta, as she's already very jealous.

6. Where do you sell your work?

I starting selling online back in 2006, thanks to the wonder that is Etsy. That shop is still open at http://aquariann.etsy.com, but I am currently only listing my most popular items there. All the items I have in stock are now listed in my ArtFire shop at http://aquariann.artfire.com.

7. Do you blog?
Very poorly, at http://aquariann-art.blogspot.com. I have so many ideas for entries, but rarely ever actually sit down to write them. By the time I make it home from my day job as a graphic artist for a newspaper, my brain is zombie mush.

8. Are you on any social networks you'd like to share?

Yes! I mostly frequent squidoo (http://squidoo.com/aquariann), facebook (http://facebook.com/aquariannArt) and twitter (http://twitter.com/aquariann), but occasionally can still be found on deviantart (http://aquariann.deviantart.com), flickr (http://flickr.com/photos/aquariann), livejournal (http://aquariann.livejournal.com) and myspace (http://myspace.com/aquariann)

9. Do you watch or listen to anything while you work? If so, what?

Ever since I discovered the FUNimation channel, I've been tuning in constantly. It's a 24-hour anime network. How brilliant is that?!

10. Tell us one random fact about your self *wink*

I have naturally long nails and can bend all the joints in my fingers so it looks like I have witch hands. Freaks my boyfriend out, but it comes in handy during Halloween, my favorite holiday. Yay!

Interview with Every Day Living

Today's Feature is going to be a little different. For starters, I'm running it on Saturday! I ran a gazillion errands yesterday and then had a migraine in the evening so I wasn't home long enough to put this together and put it up!

I met Tim when a mutual friend of ours (Sharla of Beaded Tail) told me that he was featuring etsy sellers on his blog! I contacted him to be featured, and that got us talking. He agreed to be interviewed for my blog...and the rest is history!

Oh, and he did feature me a couple of days ago, you can find the post here: "Creative Gifts from Rose Works Jewelry."

RWJ: How about starting off by telling me a little bit about what you blog about and why you blog?

Tim: I guess the main reason I started blogging, was to try and maintain some semblance of sanity in my life. You see, I’m a stay at home dad and I also home school our kids, so you can guess how much outside contact I have with people…none. So, during one of my travels on the Internet, I came across and interesting site, which happened to be a blog. I had never even heard of the term before, but it sounded like something that would be fun to do, so I did a little more research and ended-up on Blogger (well, it IS free). I then got myself a book on html and css and taught myself just enough coding to get myself into trouble.
As to what to blog about, well I started to write about my experiences as a stay at home dad, but after about a month I ran out of ideas, so I though it might be fun to post jokes and funny pictures. That lasted about another month before I got tired of posting other people’s work and not doing any writing. Besides, I started blogging to write, right? Now, although the main theme of my site is about my journey with losing weight, I usually just write about whatever is on my mind.

RWJ: Do you mind if I ask what lead to the decision to be a stay at home, homeschooling Dad?

Tim: This was a straight monetary decision. My wife and I had already decided that we wanted one of us to stay home with our children. When my wife found out she was expecting, we had a huge decision to make. I was currently working for the State and my wife was working for the Federal Government. Even though I had been in the position for over three years before my wife got pregnant, the insurance company considered it a pre-existing condition and would not cover it (They stated that any condition under five years is considered pre-existing. Please don’t ask me to try and explain this “logic”), which meant we would be stuck with the entire $4,000+ bill. On the other hand, my wife’s insurance, through the government, would cover 100% of the doctor and hospital bills. This decided the matter and, when our first daughter was born, I gave-up my job and have been home with them ever since.
As for the home schooling, our eldest had been in private school for four years (our youngest for three) and we could just no longer cover the costs. My wife and I asked them whether they wanted to go to public school or be home schooled. Well, they decided to learn at home, so I did some research and found that Virtual Academy is run through our local public school system. They supply the computers, books, and any supplies needed for the lessons. They also have teachers who conduct online classes in various subjects. Since this is affiliated with our public school system, our kids must meet State standards in attendance and they must pass State standardized testing.
RWJ: Very cool! I was home schooled so I'm well aware of some of the advantages that can go alone with the experience. What gave you the idea of featuring etsy sellers?

Tim: This last spring, my friend over at the BeadedTail gave me the idea when she began featuring the works of several sellers each Friday. I decided that since I have no talent, it might be nice to try and help those that do. The people in the Etsy community have tremendous talent and although it may sound strange in this day and age, I truly like to help people. Now, I know I don’t have the best site out there, but I figure that any extra exposure can be helpful.

RWJ: Is there anything you've learned about blogging that you'd like to share with other bloggers?

Tim: Beyond the usual SEO tricks and tips, I would say that if you are just starting out, blog because it is something YOU want to do. It can be very frustrating when you first start out, because more than likely, there will be very few people stopping by. I understand from personal experience that it can get pretty depressing when you pour your heart out on a post and nobody stops by to read it. Try not to get too discouraged and just keep writing, because the audience will eventually come. Also, just be yourself and let your personality seep into your writing. This will allow people a chance to get to know you better, which can also help you build a loyal reader base.

Next, enjoy yourself. Don't get frantic about posting every single day. Yes, it is important to update frequently, but don't let the blog take over your life. Don't lose sleep over not having anything to write about. The best thing to do in these situations is to walk away and do something else. Believe it or not, an idea will come.

Lastly, I would also suggest that you become involved in various social networking sites. Visit other blogs and leave relevant comments on posts that interest you. On those sites you find particularly interesting, leave your relevant comments and bookmark the site, so you can return to it later. Become involved in the blogging community, because you will meet some fantastic people.

RWJ: Thank you for sharing with us Tim!

Featuring Made by Melissa

Melissa is this months Featured Etsy Blogger, and she agreed to let me interview her! I had a lot of un getting to know a little bit more about Melissa. She's a team mate I hadn't really had much of a chance to connect with before now, and we have a lot of the same interests!

1. What type of art work do you do?

I make beaded jewelry and I crochet

2. How did you get started doing art work?

I started making jewelry at a very young age - I remember playing with my great aunt's old broken costume jewelry when I was only 5 or 6 years old. Every day I would string myself a new necklace and tie a bow with the string around my neck. I thought I was so gorgegous!! LOL!
I started crocheting when I was about 13. A family friend taught me the basics, then a few years later another family friend taught me some more. The rest I picked up from reading patterns and looking at finished pieces made by other people.

3. Do you do any other crafts?

I bake for holidays and special occasions, I also make photo albums for my son every year (ok, so I only made one so far, and I am way behind on the others, but in my head, I claim that I do it.)

4. Is there a story behind your shop name?
Nothing! Its pretty simple. I'm Melissa, and I made the things in my shop. I often wish I came up with something more catchy or creative, but I don't think its worth it to change anything right now.

5. What's your favorite piece in your shop right now?

Can I cheat and pick two? I love my Halloween Star Baby Blanket - http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?listing_id=32046675 - its my new favorite blanket pattern and I am having a lot of fun with it. Olivia Octapus is my other favorite item right now - http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?listing_id=30125270 - she was so much fun to make and I've had that yarn in my stash for so long and never really knew what to do with it, then suddenly, I thought, a red and pink striped octapus would just be so much fun!

6. Where do you sell your work?

On Etsy and at local craft shows.

7. Do you blog?

8. Are you on any social networks you'd like to share?

9. Do you watch or listen to anything while you work? If so, what?

Not usually, it all depends. If I am alone, then I can blast the radio or watch some NCIS reruns. If my little man is around, then I crochet while he watches whatever he is interested in at the time. I actually, get a lot of crocheting done during baseball season and with the playoffs coming up, I see myself staying up late and crocheting until the games end!

10. Tell us one random fact about your self *wink*

This one always seems to shock people - I do not know how to ride a bike and I have no desire to learn. My father pushed me to learn to ride, I had a nasty fall that resulted in my mother picking rocks out of my elbow and knee and decided that I was done with it.

Friday's Featured Artist - Little Studio Photography and Jewelry

I was trying to remember this morning where I first met Meg, but I'm not really sure! I think it was back when I was using Entrecard, but I'm not 100% sure. Either way, I soon realized that I had discovered a wonderful artisan with a huge heart. I'm excited to be able to feature her here this week!
1. What type of art work do you do?

I make handcrafted jewelry and do photography

2. How did you get started doing art work?

I started making jewelry in high school so that I could get the pieces I wanted at the prices I could afford, with quality (remember that word??), and continued off and on until I got fibromyalgia. I got so sick I couldn’t work outside of my home so I started my jewelry full time to try and make some income. I haven’t looked back!

My photography started just before high school: I went on a cross country trip with my friend (6 weeks in a minivan woo!) and my mom got me a little point and shoot camera with a roll of film per week. I took some great photos and I was bitten by the bug :)

3. Do you do any other crafts?

Oh I do many crafts; I think it is the ADD. I love to knit and crochet, I love to draw and paint, I love to make homemade soaps, candles and body products, though they take quite a bit of time so I don’t do it often – usually for special Christmas gifts and that sort of thing.

4. Is there a story behind your shop name?

I wanted a name that was friendly and inviting, but not too homey and unprofessional-sounding. I have a very small room to use as my studio and that is really how it came about – a “little studio” for me to work in…sort of cheesy, but now it is done and I can’t change it :)

5. What's your favorite piece in your shop right now?

ACK! That is hard! I really like this ring I recently finished…It has my birthstone in it, so I suppose I shouldn’t be surprised! (featured to the right)

I also am completely in love with my NeoAmour Collection – Inspired by powerful women of the past but designed for women of today. I love the femininity and style of the pieces – not too girly but definitely pretty and they make you feel like a queen yourself when you put them on

6. Where do you sell your work?

7. Do you blog?

I love to blog! I have several blogs: http://www.meglittlestudio.blogspot.com
http://www.fibrodiaries.blogspot.com This one is a duplicate of my meglittlestudio blog for those who for whatever reason can’t see my main one :) http://www.lowallergykitchen.blogspot.com for recipes catering to people with food allergies

8. Are you on any social networks you'd like to share?

9. Do you watch or listen to anything while you work? If so, what?

I love to listen to music while I create – classical, Celtic, or simple slow music – I find that fast music just makes me want to get up and sing and dance!

10. Tell us one random fact about your self *wink*

I can write in mirror image almost as well as I can write normally….however, as my handwriting is truly abysmal, that isn’t really saying much!

Want a great deal on her incredible jewelry? Well your in luck! Right now she has a 20% off sale running in her shop!

Friday's Featured Artist - WhiMSy Love

I first met Nikki when I was still a relatively new member of Etsy. At that point in time I lived in Eastern WA, and we were both a part of the Eastern WA Etsy Team! I've always admired her zest for life, her sense of humor, and her imaginative art work :)

1. What type of art work do you do?

I create ALL kinds of handmade stuff. But mostly I'm drawn to vintage items: buttons, books, fabrics, trim, papers, etc.
So there's usually a bit of something of that sort mixed in with whatever I'm making.

2. How did you get started doing art work?

I have always been a crafty gal. When I was a kid, my mom pretty much encouraged craftiness wherever & whenever. She is admittedly not a crafty person, but she allowed me to pursue whatever creative thoughts I had. I pretty much never remember a time when I didn't have the handmade itch.

3. Do you do any other crafts?

I make button rings. I fold books into art. I twist forks into easels. I paint. I sew. I glue things... I can't choose just one thing, so I do it all!

4. Is there a story behind your shop name?

I originally had the name "WhiMSy" while my mom & I sold vintage items, collectibles & some handmade things in a small space in an antique mall. When I signed up to have a shop on Etsy I guess that name was already taken. So, I added the "love". And I figure that those 2 words (WhiMSy & love) describe perfectly my style of handmade craft AND my personality:sometimes a goofball (WhiMSy) & sometimes very girly & romantic (love).

5. What's your favorite piece in your shop right now?

I love the Vintage Button Rings. They're happy little treats & fun to make. I have a "thing" for old buttons & wear one of my button rings almost every day! (My button rings were also mentioned in the July issue of Glamour Magazine: the Greek Edition!)

6. Where do you sell your work?

I mostly sell my work on Etsy, at http://whimsylove.etsy.com Some of my items are sold in a few shops online. Most recently my Writing on the Wall Book Art is being sold at the Bellevue Art Museum. I have yet to approach local boutiques to sell my stuff. I'm either too busy as a mom or too chicken. (Or both?)

7. Do you blog?

Oh YES I blog!! I LOVE blogging! http://whimsy-girl.blogspot.com I feel like my blog is the backstage pass into WhiMSy love & my crafty little world. I love writing, taking pictures & making stuff & so those 3 things combine to create a nifty little blog!

8. Are you on any social networks you'd like to share?

I have a twitter account http://twitter.com/whimsylove & a flickr account http://www.flickr.com/photos/whimsy_girl/ . That's about as social as I get right now. My Etsy shop, blogging & corresponding to emails all day keep me pretty busy. (Not to mention 2 wee kidlets that need my attention every once in a while!)

9. Do you watch or listen to anything while you work? If so, what?

Sometimes I'll spread my projects on the floor of my art studio & watch old game shows (that's one of the only channels I get on my TV). Or I'll get all cozy on the couch & watch a movie when I'm making something. When I am blogging or on the computer, I'll listen to music.

10. Tell us one random fact about your self *wink*

How 'bout MORE than one? It's more fun that way, right?
I love s'mores to an obsession, I wish I were brave enough to wear a fauxhawk, & I bite my fingernails

Friday's Featured Artist - Memories for Life!

Edi of Memories for Life Scrapbooks is an artist you've seen on my blog before. Why? Well because she's awesome! She's become a good friend and she's been a winner on my blog! This month she's also the Etsy Bloggers Featured artist - so of course I decided I had to interview her :) So with out further ado...let's get to know her! Click on any of the pictures to be taken to it's listing.

1. What type of art work do you do?

Everything paper crafting. I make several different types of scrapbooks, custom layouts, greeting cards, wedding invitations. I even make scrapbooks out of flip flops :)

2. How did you get started doing art work?

I owe my start in crafting to the 4-H Club. My aunt was our leader and she always had a different project for us each month. The month we learned how to make handmade greeting cards with stamps...I was hooked! Then shortly after we had a month learning how to scrapbook...and it was love at first sight :) I've been paper crafting for over 12 years now!

3. Do you do any other crafts?

My paper crafting keeps me pretty busy...I haven't found any time for other crafts yet :)

4. Is there a story behind your shop name?

I wanted to send the message that scrapbooks are a lifelong keepsake. And since what I scrapbook is memories...Memories for Life Scrapbooks was born.

5. What's your favorite piece in your shop right now?

My Custom Name and Word Albums are by far my most popular! I really enjoy making them because each one is unique. I like adding little personal bits here and there in the album to make each one special :) I'm also lovin' my new albums I'm making with my Bind-It-All! These should be in my shop real soon!

6. Where do you sell your work?

7. Do you blog?

8. Are you on any social networks you'd like to share?

I'm on Facebook under Edi Royer.
On Plurk under Memories for Life Scrapbooks

9. Do you watch or listen to anything while you work? If so, what?

A local radio station that plays 70s, 80s, 90s and today's rock. I love 80s hair bands :)

10. Tell us one random fact about your self *wink*
I hated the color pink until I hit my 20s...now it's my favorite color :) I guess I found my girly side!

Friday's Featured Artist - Meri GreenLeaf!

One of my favorite parts about being an on-line seller is that I make all sorts of wonderful friends! Susan (who goes by Meri on-line for the most part) has fast become one of those friends. We have many of the same interests and spend a lot of time talking on plurk! So it is my great pleasure to introduce her to you as this week's featured artist :) Click on any of the pictures you see below to be taken to the listing.

1.What type of art work do you do?

Name it, I probably do it. ;) I crochet, make jewelry and chainmaille, sculpt, paint (usually on fabric) and draw, make dreamcatchers, spin (and sometimes dye) yarn, and sew (handsew- I don't know how to use a sewing machine). My main one is the crochet, though; even a lot of my jewelry is crocheted. Most of what I make is fantasy-
related, but I also make things inspired by nature.

2.How did you get started doing art work?

I've always been into art; in elementary school I'd stay in at lunchtime to help in the art room, and in high school I stayed after school almost every day to work in the pottery classroom (pottery was my obsession back then, but I haven't had a chance to work in it since). I also used to make a lot of plastic jewelry when I was a kid. For the things I do now, I started crocheting about four years ago all because I wanted a Hufflepuff scarf from Harry Potter, and I haven't put down my hooks since. The rest of the art I do I've picked up in the few years since, mostly teaching myself
and winging it as I go along.

3.Do you do any other crafts?

I think I already answered this- yes, I do a lot of them. :)

4.Is there a story behind your shop name?

Both “Elfling Creations” and my Etsy shop “Elbit Enterprises” (although I may be changing that one to match at some point- I just haven't done that yet) come from the race of my alias/persona (and old roleplay character) who is a half elf/half halfling (or hobbit); I combined those races and got “Elbit” originally, but lately have switched over to using the combined “Elfling” instead. I go by “Meri Greenleaf” online (and sometimes in real life, as well); that was the name of my old roleplay character that has become my alter-ego (nope, I'm not a Legolas fangirl, just a huge fan of Mirkwood; “Thranduiliell” [the original second part of the name] would have been too hard for people to find me with. Besides, “Greenleaf” fits me well because I'm obsessed with the color green and forests).

5.What's your favorite piece in your shop right now?

Oh geez, that's a hard one! I love making everything I do! I think it may be Wynmaeg, my crocheted renaissance wench plushie.
(featured at the top of the post)
She's one of my older plushies, but I had so much fun making her and coming up with all the accessories for her outfit- and I love dressing up for the Renfaire, so it was fun getting to make a costumed doll.

But then again, my favorite could be this faerie cat, named after my own black kitty Clarabell. (featured to the right)
That doll isn't perfect (it was my first attempt at making an animal pattern), but I think it's adorable. Then again, I may be biased because it's based off my fur-baby. ;)

6.Where do you sell your work?

I'm on a few random online craft selling sites, but my two main ones are Artfire and Etsy:
My website is http://elflingcreations.com but I don't actually sell on that site; I use it to link to my other shops.

7.Do you blog?
Yup- I love blogging! My art blog is in two places- the main one is on blogger (http://merigreenleaf.blogspot.com) but I also crosspost most of the entries to my art livejournal (http://elbit-blog.livejournal.com).

8.Are you on any social networks you'd like to share?
I'm on a whole bunch, but Plurk is my favorite. :) These are the ones I use most:

9.Do you watch or listen to anything while you work? If so, what?

A lot of the time when I'm working I'll listen to audiobooks (literature, mostly- I love http://librivox.org because that site has free audiobooks that are in the public domain) or comedy (usually Eddie Izzard- I love him!) on my iPod, but sometimes I'll also try to read at the same time (that one's a bit hard to do, lol) or watch tv (also distracting). When I'm listing and editing photos I'll often listen to music- usually Blackthorn, Enter the Haggis, Hanson, Spin Doctors, Jimmy Eat World, Goo Goo Dolls, and Tonic, as well as the occasional filk or video game song (yeah, my playlist is pretty eclectic). I've recently started streaming Pandora Radio, too, so I get to listen to all sorts of fun Celtic and Celtic rock bands that I hadn't heard of before. :)

10.Tell us one random fact about your self *wink*

Just one? Hmm... well, besides being an artist, my main goal in life is to become a professor of British Literature, hopefully being able to focus on the Renaissance- I have a thing for Renaissance plays. Besides art, books are my obsession.

I recently won a cartilage chain earring like the one you see above from Meri in a blog contest! Pictures will be coming soon :)

Friday's Featured Artist - Spirit Essence Art

This weeks artist is a gal with not only incredibly talent - but a huge heart! Arlene of Spirit Essence Art has been a huge encouragement to me, and I hope that you love her art work as much as I do!
1. What type of art work do you do?

Right now, I am a painter using watercolors and oils. I also enjoy creating pages in my art journal, which sometimes in which I use paints, collage techniques, and the use of markers, pens, and a bit of stamping.

2. How did you get started doing art work?

I started doing crafts many years ago, from macramé to pottery, and stained glass. I even had my own brick and mortar stained glass supply and gift shop for several years. It was during this period that I decided to take a drawing class, so I would feel more secure about drawing up my own custom designed stained glass patterns for clients. The class I took was divided into two sections. The first section, that I was in, consisted of people taking the drawing course. The second one had the students that were taking painting.

I learned a lot about drawing, though I was intrigued with what the painting students were doing and I kept walking over to the easels to see what those people were doing. The following semester, I signed up for the class again, but this time signed up for the painting segment! That’s how I learned to paint with oil paints, and I have loved painting ever since. This past year I have been teaching myself the use of watercolors, and am fascinated with how different they are from oils.

3. Do you do any other crafts?

Well, I still have all my stained glass gear and am actually teaching beginning stained glass at the local community college. I also have spent years creating glass treasures by fusing it in glass kilns, including jewelry and other, larger art pieces. I am not doing any new glass creating these days, though I still have a lot of pieces that I created last year, and that are in my Artfire shop.

4. What's your favorite piece in your shop right now?

Of the glass pieces, I would say it is my Rainbow Border Square Glass Bowl because I just love the spectrum of clear colors or the Red Starfish Dichroic Glass Pendant because of the sparkly glass in it and the starfish is a special symbol to me.

Of the paintings in my shop, my favorite one is my Underworld Fantasy Watercolor because it was so free and spontaneous, and I love the colors in it.

5. Where do you sell your work?

Right now I only have a shop on Artfire.com though I am looking for more venues for my paintings, especially ones that will offer the possibility of prints. http://www.artfire.com/users/SpiritEssenceArt

6. Do you blog?

Yes I do! I love to blog now, though it was difficult at first for me to post regularly, since I couldn’t conceive in the past that anyone would be interested in what I was doing. Now, I especially like to post in my blog since I am creating so often, to share what I have created as well as any of my “process” – both my internal process and some of how and what I use to create the paintings. I realized that I just love reading others’ blogs with this kind of information, so I want to share my own so others might also enjoy what I am learning and experiencing. For me it is a way to reach out to others and share myself, something that I am making more of an effort to do lately. For anyone who is interested, my blog is http://www.SpiritEssenceArt.com and I love to have new viewers as well as comments.

7. Are you on any social networks you'd like to share?

Yes I am: I am on Twitter (www.twitter.com/arlenemh), Facebook (www.facebook.com/arlenemh), Plurk (www.plurk.com/spiritessenceart) and a few other smaller networks.

8. Do you watch or listen to anything while you work? If so, what?

Sometimes I listen to music while I work, often some New Age kind of music or motivational music, but more often than not, I love the silence of my studio and enjoy just hearing the birds singing or my own thoughts in my head.

9. Tell us one random fact about your self *wink*

Though I am a US citizen, I lived for 10 years in New Zealand and am a permanent resident there. I went there because I had met and fell in love with my husband at an international spiritual / personal growth retreat in Australia, and he was from there. I went to join him in the South Island of New Zealand where he lived, and we were married there eventually. They were wonderful years and I grew a lot as an individual and loved the natural surroundings and lovely people there.

Friday's Featured Artist - Miesmama

I'd like to introduce you all to Becky of Miesmama! Becky is one of my Etsy Blogger team mates (and the featured blogger this month!) and she is not only a talented artist, she also has a sweet spirit that radiates through her every interaction! I have one of her felt flowers (like the purple one shown below) on one of my purses and I simply love it!

1. What type of art work do you do?

I do fiber art, mostly with felt, it's a medium that makes me extremely happy - I love looking at fiber arts, maybe it's because it's so tactile, I don't know!

2. How did you get started doing art work?

I guess I've done it all my life, you start out so creative when you're a child, when I watch my children drawing, or paiting, I wish I could get a little of that freedom back! I also went to college for a while, doing textile arts.

3. Do you do any other crafts?

A couple of years ago, I joined a knitting group run by a dear friend, and she taught us how to knit, it had been something I was yearning to do, and now i love it, it's so relaxing, and yet productive at the same time!

4. What's your favorite piece in your shop right now?

Oooh that's hard, you become so invested in all of them! I think it's my "tree fern clutch bag" though, it embodies what my style is well I think, felted and full of nature! Though, I'm loving the fun and versatility of my felt flowers.

5. Where do you sell your work?

At the moment, it's only at Etsy. I would love to do art and craft fairs, but finding the time is hard at the moment, with two children and their many summer plans.

6. Do you blog?

Yes, and what a lovely world that is to be in, full of warm, friendly, supportive and like-minded people. http://www.miesmama.blogspot.com

7. Are you on any social networks you'd like to share?

I'm on Twitter, and probably soon Facebook. But I really love Flickr, does that count as a social network?, it can so inspirational, and a great place for feedback.

8. Do you watch or listen to anything while you work? If so, what?

Both, all my work lends itself well to multi-tasking, it can be anything - lately, I love listening to Wilco, Feist, Innocence Mission and Sigur Ros. TV mostly is Doctor Who, Primeval, and Torchwood on BBC America, and I can't wait for the new season of Lost, I'm totally addicted!

9. Tell us one random fact about your self *wink*

I'm addicted to all things Japanese and Kawaii, and I swap a lot on Swap-Bot, if you're ready for a new addiction go and check it out, there are swaps for everyone!

Friday's Featured Artist - LiberTeas

I first met LiberTeas because of the Pacific Northwest Guild on Artfire...and then we became friends on Plurk! I'm a bad team mate - and I had completely forgotten where I'd met her until I started putting this post together - and realized we live in the same town! How fun is that? We'll have to do tea at some point :)

1. How did you get started making tea?

I started out as a tea drinker, really. I fell in love with a particular blend of chocolate tea that was available at a small antique shop in Orange, CA. When they went out of business, they took their tea with them, and I tried to find another chocolate tea to replace it with, but all the chocolate teas that I found were not quite what I was looking for. So, I figured, how hard could it be to flavor and blend teas myself? Boy, was I in for a big surprise.

After a couple of years of trying and failing, I gave up for a while. Then a couple of years later, I gave it another earnest try, and after about a year finally came up with a flavor that I liked! My Chocolate Rose Romance tea is the fruit of that particular labor, it has gone through many transitions over the last 7 years, but, I think I've finally created the blend I set out to create. It's very rich and decadent and very chocolate-y, just like the blend that I remember from the antique shop in Orange, CA.

2. What do you think is most challenging about making and selling tea?

The most challenging part for me, is absolutely the marketing aspect. I have learned the hard way that if you make it, they won't come unless you let them know it's there... and even then, they don't always come! I'm much more the artist, and not much of a business person, and not very good at all with the marketing/advertising aspect of the business.

3. Do you do any other crafts?

Yes. I'm an altered artist and mixed media artist, as well as an occasional zinester. Some of my collages can be found here: http://eccentricpastiche.artfire.com

4. What's your favorite tea in your shop right now?

Well, there will always be a special place in my heart for my Chocolate Rose Romance, for obvious reasons! Honestly, I love all of my teas, because I really create my teas for my own palate, if I like it, I'll sell it... I don't carry anything that I won't drink myself. Lately, I've been drinking a lot of my Green Apple Tea though, I think because it's really good iced!!!

5. Where do you sell your work?

I have several venues where I sell:
I sell at artfire: http://liberteas.artfire.com

6. Do you blog?

I do, sadly, I haven't updated in a while, but intend to get back to blogging often!!! I have a tea journal: http://liberteas.blogspot.com and an art journal: http://eccentricpastiche.blogspot.com In addition, I do reviews of tea (not my own! Hey, what can I say, I love tea!) for the tea review blog: http://teareviewblog.com

7. Are you on any social networks you'd like to share?

I am on Plurk and Twitter as Liberteas. I am just building a facebook page for Liberteas, and I all I really have done at this point is reserve the name for it! Same is true for MySpace.

8. Do you watch or listen to anything while you work? If so, what?

I am usually just listening to whatever anyone else in my family is watching or listening to... I have 2 daughters, one of them is usually either listening to music or watching TV.

9. Tell us one random fact about your self *wink*
I'm a paper junkie. I am totally addicted to paper! I go nuts when I go to a paper store like Paper Zone or Paper Source. My family think I'm completely crazy and are totally embarrassed because I'm walking around in a daze, gently massaging all the paper, and drooling like Homer Simpson with a donut. I don't know exactly what it is about paper... but I love it!

Friday's Featured Artist - Curious Mess

I don't remember where I first stumbled across the shop Curious Mess - but I do remember that I instantly fell in love with her bowls! So I'm quite excited to be able to interview her for my blog and share her work with the rest of you :)

1. What type of art work do you do?

I love creating colorful and whimsical artwork. I like to paint on wood mainly. But I also enjoy translating my ideas and designs into art quilts, fabric bowls and most recently fabric pendants. Fabric intrigues me and I love trying to manipulate and play with it in odd ways.

2. How did you get started doing art work?

I've always loved expressing myself creatively. But only about 6 years ago did I start creating things. It began with quilts and just took off from there. After I started quilting, I discovered art quilts....which really intrigued me! The fact that you don't have to follow strict rules like you do with quilts.....fun!! As I started experimenting and making small art quilts, making and trading ATC"s was becoming very popular. So I started making smaller fabric ATC's to trade....which then led to trying out other mediums. ATC's and their smaller format really allowed me to experiment with mediums that I wasn't entirely comfortable with yet (such as painting and clay). After that, things just took off and I just started playing and having fun!

3. Do you do any other crafts?

Quilting was the first thing that got me started down the road of crafting and expressing myself creatively and it's still holds a special place in my heart. I don't make quilts that often but I do enjoy the process when I get the chance. I also enjoy playing around with polymer clay, although I'm definitely still learning when it comes to this medium. I'm having a ton of fun with it though! I find that crafting and being creative is just too much fun not to try all the different types of things out there. I certainly have my core artwork but I just enjoy playing too much not to at least try other things.

4. What's your favorite piece in your shop right now?

Right now, it's my "Expressions of Love" piece. It was a piece that wasn't pre-planned at all and just kind of happened, so I'm very pleased with how it turned out.

5. Where do you sell your work?

Right now I only sell on etsy, although I have an artfire shop as well, I just haven't had the time to fill it yet.

6. Do you blog?

Yes I do, and love love love it! My blog address is:

7. Are you on any social networks you'd like to share?

8. Do you watch or listen to anything while you work? If so, what?

Most of the time, when I work I will pop in one of the seasons of the Simpsons. I just love the background noise and it's something that won't totally distract me. If I'm not in the mood to watch something, I'll put my Ipod on shuffle. Some artists that are in the regular rotation are Jason Mraz, Damien Rice, Mika, and ANYTHING 80's! :)

9. Tell us one random fact about your self *wink*

I'm a tad OCD when I eat. I have to compose each and every bite. I guess my rationalization is that if I don't finish everything on my plate....at least I got the best out of each bite. lol Apparently this looks really odd because my husband caught me doing it one time and thought I had found a bug in my food.

Friday's Featured Artist - LazyT Crochet!

This week's artist is also the Etsy Blogger for the month! Tricia of LazyT Crochet has been a part of the team for quite awhile now, and I remember her being very friendly and welcoming when I first started. I had a lot of fun getting to know her better and I hope you do too!

1. What type of art work do you do?

I consider myself to be a fiber artist. I started out with simple cotton and acrylics in classic crochet, but have included a lot more natural fibers and techniques over the past year or two. I like designing knit and crochet shawls, hats, and purses as well as Nuno felted scarves and accessories.

2. How did you get started doing art work?

I taught myself how to crochet and started making dishcloths and potholders for gifts. The family can only wear so many hats, so I started making lots of different things.

3. What's Nuno felting?
I'll probably be blogging about it again soon. This new cuff is wet felted also... (See the picture to the right)

3. Do you do any other crafts?

I do some sewing and often combine yarn and
fabric for projects. I am not very artistic when it comes to drawing, painting, or beading/jewelry work. I do like to add a holiday craft project to brighten up my holday show table each year. Sometimes natural things like potpourri or garlands.

4. What's your favorite piece in your shop right now?

This art shawl is my favorite item in my shop right now. (See the shawl on the left below)
It was fun using the rings to design the edging. My favorite piece that I'm working on right now is a raw felted handbag, felt with wool batts and decorated with glitzy and colorful fibers.

5. Where do you sell your work?

I've had a shop on Etsy for over two years and sell at local shows and events. LazyTcrochet.Etsy.com

6. Do you blog?

Yes, I blog about yarns, patterns, fashions, recipes and more at LazyTcrochet.Blogspot.com

7. Are you on any social networks you'd like to share?

I have a Facebook page at
http://www.facebook.com/home.php#/pages/LazyTcrochet/32716500715

8. Do you watch or listen to anything while you work? If so, what?

I sometimes listen to audio books, but haven't in awhile. I do like to catch up on a soap or two.

9. Tell us one random fact about your self *wink*

Hmmm...random random. I don't like taragon. It can totally ruin a dinner out if I order wrong!

Friday's Featured Artist - Smadars Treasure

I'd like to introduce you all to a very talented bead weaver that I've had the pleasure of getting to know! I contacted her awhile ago with a question - and that conversation turned into a friendship that eventually led to me joining the Etsy Bead Weavers! There's so much more I could say - but I'll let her work and her words speak for themselves :)

1. What type of art work do you do?

I create jewelry, focusing on beadweaving and embroidery, but I also like designing other jewelry with assembled components and wire-work.

2. How did you get started

doing art work?

In 2004 I attended a beading workshop – simple stringing – and I realized that creating with beads was very relaxing for me. I continued beading for a few more months until I discovered the fascinating world of bead weaving.

3. Do you do any other crafts?

Ever since I was a child I liked crafting – painting,

knitting, scrapbooking, wood engraving and sculpting, but what I really love is drawing. Beadweaving took over my spare time (and my Muse) and I sometime miss drawing … This is my last drawing, from about two years ago, of an old Indian woman by a photograph of one of my most favorite photographer Wendell Phillips (please see the images at the bottom)

4. What's your favorite piece in your shop right now?

Note - I did ask her this question - but I'm thinking it must have sold because I can no longer find it! Congrats on the sale Smadar!

5. Where do you sell your work?

Most of my work can be found in my Etsy shop www.smadarstreasure.etsy.com

but I also have a shop on Artfire www.smadarstreasure.artfire.com and another one on Dawanda , where you can find my assembled jewelry. http://en.dawanda.com/shop/SmadarsTreasure

6. Do you blog?

Yes, I do have a blog http://smadarstreasure.blogspot.com . I wish I could post more often, but there's never enough time… I try to update my blog everytime I have a new work finished.

7. Are you on any social networks you'd like to share?

Not long ago I have joined Facebook, which is fun and lets you make new beady friends from all over the world. I am also proud to be a member of two beading groups – the Etsy BeadWeavers (EBW) and the Bead Art Originals (BAO) group.

8. Do you watch or listen to anything while you work? If so, what?

Sometimes I listen to a local radio station that broadcast non-stop music, but I prefer working in a quiet environment. That's why I usually bead at late night hours, when everyone in my family is sleeping.

9. Tell us one random fact about your self *wink*

I think I am a compulsive collector. :) Until I discovered beading, and to the resentment of my family, I used to collect many kinds of what people would call "junk", like boxes, pieces of wood, wrapping papers etc. in order to create something beautiful out of them. I now have tons of "materials" in my working room, waiting patiently to be reused. I stopped collecting junk materials, but now I am collecting beading supplies of all kinds..;)

The picture on the left goes with the link and is the picture she was working from as mentioned in question #3 :)
