Meri Greenleaf's Giveaway Winner!

First of all I just have to say - a huge Thank You!!! to everyone who entered this week's contest! We had a record number of entries and that tells me that our new promotions idea is working! Which is very exciting for all the future featured giveaway artists! Now to the fun stuff...

Did you see that? 54 entries! Oh my goodness!

Now who was number 23?

Ooo...another winner that I don't know! So I dived into my e-mail and found their e-mail address :) Unfortunately they don't have a web-site I can point you all too (that I can find easily), so I'll be getting in touch with them and letting them know they won! If they do have a website I can send you too I'll post about it later!

Check back on Monday for our new contest! Also, I have a lot of fun posts coming up: 1. A post to introduce you to my muses; 2. Discussing the differences between Artfire and Etsy, and .... 3. Lots more about promotions! Talk to you soon :D

treasure hunt

as one who tends to be very task oriented when it comes to spending time on etsy, i am in LOVE with etsy circle and activity feed...

the activity feed is the spiral just to the right of the orange 'etsy' box in the grey bar across the top (are you blown away by my technical lingo or what?)... as you add to your circle your world will expand -

oh the places you'll go and the people you'll meet... because when someone in your circle favorites a shop or item, you get to see what they have discovered! i don't often linger and search randomly... and i know i am missing out on magic... but let's face it, we have to make choices with our time... but now every day is a treasure hunt...

because someone in my circle had favorited a shop - i got to meet jamie spinello above...

tuareg necklace

and ineke hemminga's shop that benefits the nomads of the tuareg region in south algeria...

if you haven't looked into circle and the activity feed, i encourage you to do so -

do you have a feature on etsy that you would like to share? they surely do have vast resources available -

I Got a Blog Feature!

I have been featured on SixThirtyThree blog!  This gal is a great writer. She has a love for fashion and does a wonderful job of eloquently weaving her thoughts on fashion with the various treasures she finds. I've told her she should write for fashion mags. You'll find several series on her blog: Outfits of the Week, Earth Friendly Topics, and Features on Handmade Artists. She has people who randomly find her blog online and that's just great! Here's a little big about her...

Helping people motivates me.
I took my love of colors, my ability to write, and my motivation to help others and I created a blog. Creating stories from my life and my imagination, I blend my three passions together into a life blog which hopefully brings added exposure to people who are passionate about and expressing their creative talents.
One year before the recession hit, I found Etsy through Twitter. I instantly died and went to consumer heaven.  Read more from and about this wonderful visionary on her blog.

Etsy in the LA Times!

Yes, I'm a little delayed in sharing this, but that's because I just found out! I thought it was interesting though. Etsy was apparently in the LA Times on January 1st. I honestly gave up reading the article about 3/4 of the way through because it was all stuff at that point that I know (I have been on here for several years now!) but the beginning was pretty interesting! My grandmother sent it to me. If your interested I found the article online here. If you haven't checked out my shop, you can find it here :)

Told Ya Santa Was Good to Me!

In case you were wondering, we made it safely back to North Carolina. But believe me, there were a few bumps along the way! That will be tomorrows story, but for today...Christmas presents!

Santa was really really reallly good to me this year! Besides all this great stuff, me and Danny also got gift certificates to Disney and The Little Dipper in Wilmington. And I got a Shutterfly gift card! There are also a few things that I couldn't find pictures of...like the coat tree I'm waiting to get in the mail from my hubby and ALL the cute clothes that I can't wait to wear!

What did Santa bring you this year?

Gift Packaging: Little Touches = Big Magic

by Patty Lakinsmith

After being inspired by Erin's post on Art Bead Scene, I decided to give my Etsy packaging a mini-makeover for the holidays.

My normal packaging is pretty basic by design. Most of my choices are driven by the desire to be conscious of the environment, and to make sure the product arrives safely. From the inside out, I wrap the bead or jewelry in some kind of cushioning material (bubble wrap or a paper alternative - still working on that one), then a kraft paper gift box tied with a pink curling ribbon and wrapped in more cushioning, and inserted in a kraft envelope.

I don't have a logo or stickers yet, or any other fancy printed material, so I decided to go to the local craft store and make my own. I got some red card stock, a great die cutter that cuts paper in the shape of little gift tags, some clear rubber stamps, and some nice sparkly ribbon. I already had a stamp pad with gold ink.

Here's my end result:

Kind of simple, but definitely better dressed for the holidays, don't you think? I'm still wrapping this in bubble wrap and using the kraft envelope, but at least the interior part will be more attractive. I hope that my customers will like it.

Happy Solstice, everyone. It's only getting brighter from here on out.

Getting Stuff Done!

I've been really sick with a bad cold, and it hasn't gone completely away, but it's finally better enough that I can function as long as I have some cold meds! Woohoo! So what does that mean? I've been working like crazy tonight! Check it out:

First of all - just go check out my etsy shop.
I've spent all night renewing anything that has a good picture!
That's a LOT of items ladies and gentlemen :)
Tomorrow - I start taking new pictures of old items that need it!

As for Artfire...I finally added something again!

This beauty is only $15 with free shipping!

Ok - I've worked on a bunch of stuff since I last posted...
But I'm to tired to take any more pictures.
So look for this tomorrow :D

Latest order and commission

A lovely lady from America contacted me on Etsy asking if I could make one of my silver spiral necklaces for her and a pair of earrings that she wanted to go with it.

She knew exactly what the earrings should look like and this is them. I hope she likes them.
They are being sent out tomorrow for her.

Get it Together with MaryAnn...

Hmmmmm?  I have been trying to think about what I want to include in my Sunday Post for LMAJ.  Since I also post for the Beads-of-Clay on Sundays, I wanted to keep it similiar, yet different.  Here is what I've come up with...subject to change depending on how this goes.  Today, it didn't go so easy since I'm so indecisive when it comes to creating jewelry.  Like many of us who create components, we often start out creating jewelry.  I'm working out the kinks right now in terms of doing both!  I hope to make one of our extra bedrooms into a studio of sorts.  It was being used for storage while my son and his family were between houses.  When they came to clear out the very packed room, they discovered that water had gotten in (It is a walkout basemet) through the windows that were at ground level.  Needless to say, there is going to be a slight delay with my plan.

I am hoping, however, that once I can get everything spread out, my creativity will start rolling along with only minor bumps in the way rather than having mountains to climb.   You know....the ones that always seem to jump in the way right when you think you're sailing smooth....

Today I've come up with some ideas using a half dozen handmade components that I might pull out when trying to design a necklace.  Of course, I started out with about 3 dozen choices and then finally narrowed it down with sweat pouring off my face and heart palpatations serving as a drumroll.....to 6.  Now I'm going to write just a little bit more since that '6' keeps ending up on the next line all alone.....

Am
I
Obsessing?

Soooooo....I've got my materials out....time to design!!

Handmade items listed above from the following shops:

I'm Back!

Last time I blogged it was to say that I was taking a break for awhile from blogging and my jewelry business. The good news is . . . I'm back! I was gone for longer than I thought I was going to be, but sometimes life hits you that way. I'm not even sure at this point I could go back and trace the nitty gritty details of the last few months, but that's ok, because life is moving on, and that's what matters right?

I'm back to working on things, but no promises about how consistent I'll be in the near future. I'm anticipating it's going to take some time to get back into my routine and really get things back to where I want them to be. But I'm still back :)

I am really excited about connecting with everyone again! One of the best part about being a jewelry artist on the internet has been that I've met some wonderful people through Etsy, Artfire, and blogging. I can hardly wait to see what you all have been up to and be a part of your lives again!

Betel Nut Beads...What are they?

I have made a couple of jewelry pieces with the Betel Nut. I thought I would do a little research about them and share it.
They are commonly known as Areca Nuts. The nuts are seeds of the Areca palm found in the tropical Pacific, Asia, and parts of east Africa.   Technically, they are not nuts, the areca is a fruit and can be found in similar forms as our typical fruits such as dried and fresh.

Believe it or not, the betel nut can be chewed wrapped in betel leaves. Hence, the Betel Nut name it is commonly known as. Why are these chewed? When the nuts are chewed, there is a stimulant effect on the person. The effect varies by person, but usually it's no more than a cup of coffee.  The fruits are found to cause many cancers in the mouth. From what I can tell, the areca are as common in Asia as peanuts or raisins for instance in the US.

When the fruit is dried, it takes on properties similar to wood. You will find in betel nut beads, a dark rippling throughout the bead. This makes each bead unique because no two fruits are the same. Beads are often dyed. These beads are incredibly strong. What I like most is that they come from nature. The person who will be wearing this bracelet and earrings will be wearing a dried fruit that could have come from the tropical forests of Asia. What a cool thing!

Below are pictures of the Areca Nuts you might find interesting. The fruit uncut, and the inside of the fruit and the trees from which they come.

On Fire For Handmade Feature Artist: Creations with Heart

This Weeks Featured Artisan is Creations with Heart
I truly enjoy creating jewelry and it's a bonus and a pleasure to make it available to you!

I love to create classic and western jewelry that will always fit your style! Gemstones, crystals, pewter and leather are just a few materials I enjoy working with. I'm a "dog mom" so including animals in some of my creations is a must -- I love them so much! A percentage of all animal related purchases is donated to help the animals. It\'s something I like to do to help our furry friends that need and depend on us.

You'll see jewelry styles ranging from classic, animal themed, southwest, western and inspirational. My wish is to have my guests smile when they put my jewelry on. When you smile, you feel good!

I hope you enjoy the jewelry I've created and may it bring you joy and happiness
