Social Networking Karma!

What is Social Networking Karma? Why am I talking about it? First let's back up and examine the idea of Karma...

Karma, the Golden Rule, "What goes around comes around," - whatever you call it, it's a concept that has been around for for a long time. When you do nice things for other's, it often comes back to you in wonderful and unexpected ways. Right?

Now let me ask you a question. Do you ever get tired of promoting yourself? I know I do! There have definitely been times when I get tired of tooting my own horn and where I feel like I'm just blabbing to the universe with no feedback. The various social networking sites were starting to feel pointless. That's when I started thinking about Social Networking Karma.

Now, I don't want you to think I came upon this idea on my own, this has been a long process and I know that there have been a lot of different artists who've given me individual ideas that I eventually pulled together into a whole!

How it works:

Social Networking Karma happens when you promote artists (authors, bloggers, etc), other than yourself. You can do this in a lot of ways! See something you like? Share it on Twitter, Facebook, Plurk, or your blog! Then, and this is key, tell that person where you've shared it and send them a link. You'll be amazed at the results!

Since I've started practicing this habit the results have blown me away. I've had people e-mail me and tell me that I've made their day because they had a horrible day and having someone do something nice just totally floored them. I've had people tell me that they were considering shutting down their shop, then I promoted them, and it made them think that maybe there is some value to their work. I've also had a lot of people return the favor and promote me in one way or another.

There's no feeling like it! When they return the promotion, it's great, but it's the people who's day's I make, or who I end up building a relationship with them as a result, that I love :)

I'm going to be talking about some different approaches to practice Social Networking Karma over the next few weeks. Specifically we'll be talking about Twitter, Facebook, and Blogging. I may add to that list as I continue to explore the topic!

Have a Facebook Page? You NEED to Read This...

I found out about this important default setting with the "New" Facebook from a team I belong to, Handmade Harbor. Not all your fans, friends, followers are seeing your updates thanks to Facebook taking the honor of defaulting your thread to just people who you interact with the most.  This is important for EVERYONE! The story is on Etsy, but it doesn't matter if you are a crafter, or just have a personal Facebook page. This applies to everyone. Please read about this default setting and how you can CHANGE the setting to include EVERYONE you are friends with.

Featured Friday

Hi everyone! It's Friday - so that means my new blog feature - Featured Friday! I realized this morning the best part about doing this is that I didn't need to figure out what I was going to blog about! Yes, lazy, I know, but it does also bring some consistency to my blog, and I like that. Now...

Featured Facebook

Did you know that Facebook has changed a lot of their policy's recently? One of them is that you won't see postings from other people unless you've been interacting with their page. So...if you want to keep up with what I'm doing...come comment on my facebook page! Guess what? There is a surprise waiting for you over there...

Marketing Tip of the Week - Opt Out of Facebook Instant Personalization

This is a loosely defined marketing tip. Since it includes Facebook which we use for promotion, I thought it applicable.  I had seen rumors of our personal information being used for promotion on Facebook with third parties. Did you know there is a solution for this that is simple to do? You can opt out of sharing your information.  It'll take you 2 seconds following these directions. It explains what the "Instant Personalization" project is, how it works and how to opt-out.

I saw this tip from a retweet on Twitter. Credit goes to Purplehayz.

Add My Etsy To Fan Page

I have just added etsy into our facebook page.

Take a look. You can click here for instruction to add items from etsy to your facebook page too.

Marketing Tip of the Week - Avatar Consistency

I know it's tempting to change your Twitter and Facebook avatars, but when you have a business profile, it's necessary to keep your avatar the same. The best solution is to keep your avatar as a logo. If it's important to change it up, then I suggest you create a personal profile that you can change to reflect your personality.  I for one recognize everyone on Twitter, Facebook and other social networking by their avatar. I have recently been running into the changing avatars for shops that I'm looking for and cannot find because the avatar has changed to the latest theme on Facebook or their pets latest pictures. I know, that's fun!  I'm happy to see them, but tell me about them instead.

I know the handmade community like correspondence on the personal side, and you still can by using a consistent avatar. You can post in your Facebook photos tab your latest dog's trick or you child's first steps.  Or blog about it. It makes for another example to draw people in and see all your latest products.  Your customers and potential customers don't get bored with your logo or avatar. It's how they recognize you. They grow to know it and expect to see it.  McDonald's golden arches do not change, ever and neither should your 'golden arches'.

Marketing Tip of the Week - Facebook Vanity URL

I got this tip from A Slice of Delight after I had purchased some cool Lemon Citrus Slice Soap from her Etsy shop. Not only did I get great smelling soap, I also got a technical tip as well. Don't think too many buyers and sellers can say that. As most of us know, Facebook can be a bit cumbersome. So I asked  A Slice of Delight if I could pass this wonderful tip on to my blog readers and she was more than happy to help out any one she can.  I copied her tip from our conversation to insure accuracy.

When you have at least 25 fans you can change your facebook fan page to what they call a "Vanity Url". When you first create your facebook fan page it's a long jumbled up string of letters/numbers and your business name. Some of you may still be using this long name and have 100's of fans at this point...here's what you can do...

********************

Click on this link - http://facebook.com/username - at the bottom of that page you will see this link - Set a username for your Pages - click on that then you will see a drop down and when you click the drop down you should see your ' business fan page'. I actually created two by accident so I picked the one that had already started getting a few fans - at that point you should have a chance to just put in the name (with or without spaces) or any form of upper/lower case you want) and check the availability. At that point you make the big 'commit' and you can't go back. At that point this long url (I've made this up) - http://www.facebook.com/pages/Berkeley-CA/A-Slice-Of-Delight/20800345155?v=wall#/pages/Berkeley-CA/A-Slice-Of-Delight /20800345155?ref=ts will get to be www.facebook.com/asliceofdelight (if that's how you want it) - It doesn't change the name of the page title (which may have spaces) but this gets the url down to something nice and manageable

Now the URL is nice and simple and can easily be put on a business card or any other place you want it posted/tweeted/promoted/etsy/blog/website/etc..

Watch me: How I promote HJC with Facebook

As you are aware, on top of having nice and beautiful creations, it requires a lot of effort in promoting your works online. For those who have just started out, you may feel a bit lost where to start after having your own website.

Photobucket

As Facebook has achieved trenmendous growth in the past few years, I would recommend you to start with facebook as most likely your friends and blog’s readers probably have Facebook profiles already. What you need to do is for you to set up a profile there and link up your blogs.

Here are some key actions for you:
1. Create a facebook profile if you do not already have one. Click here! Once you have set it up, you can link up your blog thru RSS using Notes. You will notice your friends get to see your blog post through your profile page.

2. Create a facebook group for your handmade jewelries. If you would like to find out how it looks like, you can visit HJC's group at http://www.facebook.com/inbox/?ref=mb#/group.php?gid=51682095329

3. Create a facebook page for your business. If you would like to find out how it looks like, you can visit HJC's page at http://www.facebook.com/home.php?#/pages/Handmade-Jewelry-Jewellery-Club/49396535268

Facebook group and page are great viral marketing tool. Someone who join a group or a page may attract her other friends to join the same group or pages as well. Again, you can link up your blog post there thru RSS applications without much effort.

If you have some other tips, do share with us here. Cheers
