New life of old earrings

Recently a friend of my friend has brought me a pair of old vintage earrings (Sterling silver, labradorite and pearls) and asked me to create an unusual piece of jewelry using those earrings.

Create a new pair of earrings using the old ones? Oh, no! I decided to keep the old design, and put the earrings together on a blank beadwoven bracelet. I picked up seed beads matching labradorite and pearls for the bracelet, and added a few seed bead branches with amethyst rounds, pearls and some gemstone chips. So, here we are!

My Kumihimo Bracelet and Keychain

Hello everyone! I’d like to show you something I made last week using the art of ancient Japanese braiding called Kumihimo. But before that, just a trivia, in ancient times, Kumihimo was created by finger-loop braiding and no tool was used. Japanese patiently use their skills in braiding with their bare hands. Then later on Marudai and Takadai were invented to make complex braiding much faster.

Marudai from Wikipedia

Takadai from Wikipedia

Nowadays, Kumihimo disks are made of foam plastic that’s, sort of, a portable Marudai - small and easy to carry anywhere. And because the modern Kumihimo disk is convenient to carry, I was able to finish my braided bracelet and keychain, halfway while traveling to visit a relative last week.

And here they are!!!

Originally, I wanted to take pictures and show everyone the steps of braiding but was not able to take photos. I was traveling when I did the keychain. Besides, as you can see, my photos weren't that clear. But I did found some pretty good video tutorials from craftycrafter and uploaded them on DIYLessons for everyone's benefit.

There's a video that will teach you the basics of Kumihimo braiding and this is good for starters. I also found a video on braiding with beads showing a very beautiful necklace. You can also learn onhow to finish Kumihimo braids with Cord End caps, which is so helpful in making jewelries and having that neat finish. And there's a video that shares helpful tips to determine where you to resume after a pause 'cause sometimes we need to stop and do something else and we get confused on what thread we stopped.

I recommend these videos. They're great!

Here's a necklace from craftycrafter. It uses the basic 8-strand braid added with beads.

Beautiful, isn't it?

So, let's get started and learn the basic with this
free video from craftycrafter on DIYLessons.

How to bead loom

This is my beading loom tool. It’s just a small beading loom and I got it for my birthday. Mom gave it to me. It’s actually just a starter kit for kids LOL but its great!!!

And here’s something I made from my beading loom tool, not too great but I think it looks cool LOL. Well, I’m just starting. I used a graphing paper to draw my pattern and I think it came out juuuust fine. ^_^

It’s a bracelet and I just attached lock findings at both ends using jumprings and pliers.

How to do it? Here’s a very cool video on Beadmat (weaving) Bracelet. You'll find more free videos on bead looming projects at DIYLessons.

If you like a printed instruction on how to bead loom, Fire Mountain Gems is sharing a printer friendly version on Beginning Looming by Marlynn McNutt. They also got a great video with Marlynn McNutt on how to bead loom. You’ll see great designs for belts, hats and jewelries. Visit thislink for more.

Now, what’s this?

It’s going to be your bead looming took after a while ^_^

If you’re up for it. You can make one, yourself and create this cute ring from The Creative Muslimah.

Have fun everyone!!!

Multi-strand Bracelet Tutorials

Hello Handmade Jewelry Club readers! Today, we're going to tackle on how to make multi-strand bracelets using strings and wires. For the first tutorial I would like to share to you a 4- part video tutorial from Sarah of Jewelry Supply. This is a 4-part step-by-step instructional jewelry making video that uses Swarovski Briolette beads and sterling silver findings.

In this video, you'll get tips on how to string beads using Fireline, how to use multi-strand silver clasp, multi-wholes spacer bars and clam shell bead tips. And here's what we're going to be make.

To finish the project here is part 3 and part 4.

Now, similar to this technique is Morgan of Portland's

With Morgan's version, she used stringing wires and crimp beads instead of Fireline and clam shell bead tips. Morgan has made a detailed tutorial that's fun and easy to follow.

Follow Morgan's free tutorial at Morgan Made It blog and make multi-strand bracelets for your family and friends!

Happy jewelry making everyone!!!

Have fun with elastics!

I love elastic cords and my favorite is the nylon elastic string. I love making bracelets stringing beads on elastics because it’s the easiest technique for me. No need for clasps, but just a knot will do and that’s one thing I really love about using elastic cord or string.

Remember, I mentioned in one of my previous articles that I made lots of elastics bracelets for Christmas? Well, my friends, aunts and cousins love them!

Cheers for me!

And now I want to show you more designs and great ideas using elastics.

Here’s one from billie monster blog, crystal and pearl bracelet, inspired by Auntie’s Beads Karla Kam Elastic Bracelet.

Another great idea of using elastics is this elastic bookmark from Nikki and

it's such a cute idea making elastic bookmark with charms.

Love the way the charms hangs from the pages of the book “,)

Another fun and easy tutorial is a making an elastic ring and you can visit Sumo’s Sweet Stuff for her Tutorial Tuesday Elastic Ring.

Have fun with elastics everyone!

Giveaway Feature - JPrideJewelry

1. Where can we find your work and what do you create?

My work is almost exclusively on Etsy (http://jpridejewelry.etsy.com), although I do sell some locally (Raleigh/Cary, NC) by word-of-mouth.  I may put an item or two on Ebay every once in a while just for the heck of it.

What  make is jewelry for women.  Necklaces, bracelets, earrings.. that sort of thing.  I'm still pretty new to selling what I create, so I haven't settled into a particular style.  If you look, my collection is fairly eclectic.  From a simple single strand of beads with a charm, to delicately linked bead units.  I'm starting to get into chain mail and wire work, so we'll see how that goes.

You can also read my blog entry about my bead soup and what I'm going to do with it.  These pieces are some that will be going on Ebay.  I'd like to get maximum exposure for this particular sale and you'll see why when you read the post! http://jewelry-by-jp.blogspot.com/2011/01/my-bead-soup.html

2. What's your favorite part about being an independent artist?

My favorite part of being an independent artist is that it gives me an outlet for my pent-up creative energy.  I have ADD, and so most things I find tedious, yet I can make a necklace with over 2000 beads without batting an eye.

3. Where do you find your inspiration?

My inspiration comes primarily from my imagination.  That or impulse.  What I mean by impulse is I'l be strolling along in the bead shop, having already picked out what I came for, and I'll see something that I have to have because I immediately see it for what it can become.  My Peruvian Pink Opal earrings are a prime example.  I saw them at the last minute, but what I saw was not a bowl of pink beads.  I saw a beautiful pair of earrings with that soft pink paired with pale blue-green.

Other inspiration comes from books or magazines.  In those cases it's a particular technique I want to try, or a new color that I've never used before.

4. What advice would you give to other artists?

Advice for other artists?  Oh gosh, I'm still looking at more established artists myself.  I think the advice I would give to those just starting out is to be persistent and determined.  Don't give up because you aren't making any sales.  Don't be afraid to put yourself out there, otherwise your chances of success are kinda slim.  If I hadn't put myself out there, I wouldn't be participating in things like Lori's Bead Soup Blog Party, or Bead Table Wednesday on Flickr, or being featured here. ;)

Slogging On

How are you doing on your New Years Goals? I'm not doing that great. Course I can blame it on getting sick to a large part, but I think the rest of it is just that it takes times to set new habits. True, posting and blogging every day is more of an old habit being resurrected, but still, it's like creating a new habit because I took a break for so long from my shop!

I've done a lot better on the "posting items" portion of my goal. I've had a lot of items to renew on my etsy, so I've been managing to log in and renew a few almost every day. Getting to this blog has been harder!

I'm hoping this next week will be a much more productive one, and that I won't be as sick so it'll be easier to achieve my goals! Oh yes, and did you notice that the item I posted a picture of is on clearance??? You should snap that up before someone else does :)

Oh yes, I also plan on reformatting my blog this week if possible, I'm very tired of the Christmas theme!

The Ball is Rolling!

White Spiral Hemp Bracelet

I sold this bracelet today! Fortunately for you - this is one that I can make more of - so it's still listed! I haven't remade it yet - but I will in the next day or two :) If you order it, it'll still be out very soon!

I've gotten going again on my shop, and things are happening, which makes me very happy! I had this order today from someone I don't know, and I have a couple more friend-orders in progress right now. Hey, it's not much, but I'll take whatever I can get!

My goal, while I'm working on building traffic again, is 5 sales a month. Since this is my first paid-for sale this month (the others are currently unpaid because they are incomplete right now) I'm at 1/5 for my sales goal! If everything goes through with the others I'll be at 4/5. Here's hoping it all works out!

Any one want to help me reach my goal? You know where to find me!

Moving Forward for Zazu Jewellery

Hi Everyone,

It feels like its been ages since I last wrote anything and there has been lots going on.
Firstly yesterday was my last craft fair of the year, I wont be booking any smaller ones next year and maybe just a couple of the bigger ones if I can get in.

Im hoping that towards the end of January I will get my Party Plan business together. I have met up with a lovely lady who lives down the road from me who is very interested. I am hoping to get about 5 agents initially. I just need to get photo's, catalogue, order forms, a chip and pin machine and some advertising material! (not too much)

I have launched my new site, there is still loads of work that needs doing on it and new items to go onto it and new ranges which will be launched in the new year. These include more sterling silver ranges, wedding ranges and my new card range.

Well I think that's all for now, speak soon.
xxx

Fun Stuff All!

This bracelet is a special one.
My brother sent me the beads from Nepal!
I'm so tempted to keep this one for myself...
But I like how it turned out so much that it's up for sale!
If no one grabs it things might not stay that way though...

Ok, I know it's not exactly spring right now...
This would still make a GREAT Christmas present though!
AND it's 10% off!

Nothing new crafty wise today - but I plan on doing a bunch this afternoon!

LOTS of CHANGES

Oh goodness! What a day it's been! I can decide where to begin! Wow. I've had a lot of things I've been wanting to get done for a long time and I got so much of it done today! Maybe I should just list it...

Cleaning:
1. Kitchen
2. Bedroom
3. Some of the living room

Design:
1. THE BLOG - I'm going for red and green right now in honor of the upcoming holiday - can you tell? LOL
2. I also created and updated both banners and avatars (and on Artfire the color theme) in both my shops.
3. I made the little section headers I wanted to make! You'll see in a minute ;)

Cooking:
1. Breakfast: pancakes and sausage :D Don't worry I really was behaving! I used sugar-free syrup and they were turkey sausages :P
2. Dinner: (breakfast was at lunch time) BBQ Pork loins, mashed potatoes, and broccoli.

Wow - it was a full day! Now on to the things in my shop and and the crafty stuff I got done yesterday!

These babies are on CLEARANCE!!!!

Wouldn't this be the perfect Christmas present?

This would be perfect to add a bit of travel flair to your
wardrobe - and perfect to wear at Christmas!

This necklace is a commission for my friend Gypsy :D
If anyone's interested in something similar just let me know!

I made something else yesterday too - but I didn't like how it turned out :P
So it's being scrapped and no picture!

Until tomorrow ~ Ruthie

Mixed Media Project

Now I'm well aware that you guys, my family and friends, are probably looking at the time stamp on this one and going, "Ruthie you dear goober...what on EARTH are you doing up and writing a blog at this time of the morning?" Well, at least some variation of that. The answer is two fold. 1. I've been sleeping weird do to meds anyway. 2. I spent about an hour and a half lying in bed developing this idea in my head and I simply had to get up and draw it out, and then write it out! There will be no rest until I do :P I actually got up and drew it out and then laid in bed for another half an hour or so developing it more in my head!

So what are you looking at? This is going to be a mixed-media piece that's based in cross-stitch. I'll go through and explain what I'm thinking for each of the elements. I did try to label each of the elements so you can decipher my drawings, but you'll need more than that to really know what I'm thinking!

~ First: This will be done on cross-stitch fabric. I don't know what count yet...I'll figure that out as I evaluate the project more. I thought about doing embroidery, but I just don't have the talent/experience for that and I DO have the experience to do this in cross stitch!

~ "To Live is to Create." I love this quote! This is where it all started. I was originally going to do a book mark with the words and then maybe a butterfly (and I still might) but then I started thinking about how it was more appropriate to include crafty type things with this quote. I thought of a couple of elements and next thing I knew it was starting to get too big to be a book mark. That's when my brain jumped to this multi-media piece. (I should mention here that I've always been fascinated with multi-media). For the main quote it will be cross stitch. I'm thinking the words "To," "is," and "to," will be done in a base color like black, and then "Live" and "Create" will be in a rich, vibrant color.

~ Butterfly - Since this was part of my original idea, and I love butterfly's, I wanted to include it! Besides, I've always thought that the butterfly is one of God's most creative and beautiful creations :) I also like how it helps to space the words out.

~ Journal - I'll make this out of construction paper or scrap booking paper. I'll make 3 rectangles (different colors?) and glue them together at the center seam using a toothpick to apply the glue. I'm toying with the idea of using a gel pen to write inspirational words on the inside pages like, "Live, Love, Laugh, Dream, Dance, Dare." Then I'll stitch along the back seam to attach it to the fabric and to create a finished journal look. This is to represent both paper crafts and writing.

~ Flowers - These are to represent all sorts of growing things and the art involved in nourishing them. Don't know what type of flowers I'll use, but something basic :P These will be done in cross stitch.

~ Quilt - I'm going to hand quilt a couple pieces of fabric (no actually batting) together in a 2"x1" square. I'll have a single color for the fabric and then use some fancy thread to quilt it. Tack it down on the corners to the fabric maybe? This is to represent all of the sewing crafts :)

~ Vase - Can't forget the clay and ceramic artists! I'm hoping to have one of my etsy friends to make a half vase with little holes along the edges so I can tack it down. I have a friend here in town who's a clay artist so she's first on my list :)

~ Easel - I'll do the easel in cross stitch and then I'm planning on getting some fabric paint and using toothpicks to make a small impressionist painting out of two or three colors. Yay for all the artists who draw and paint! NOT my specialty - hence - the impressionism :P

~ Bracelet - This IS my specialty :) I'll do bead embroidering to make a band of sorts. I'm thinking I'll put either a very small dichroic cab or a lampwork bead in the center to represent the glass artists. The majority of the bracelet will be completely sewn onto the fabric, but I'm thinking the toggle and the loop that would go around it will be "popping off" of the fabric to add to the 3d effects being created in this piece.

~ Baby Photo and Frame - Having children and raising them is a form of creation as far as I'm concerned! I'm hoping that my brother will let me use a picture of his twin boys. I'll probably get some small pieces of balsa wood to make a small frame, glue the picture to the frame, and then tack the frame down.

~ Guitar - I've always wanted to play guitar so I figured it's the best instrument to use to represent the musical arts! This one will be another cross stitch piece.

~ I'm going to put a plain backing on it and frame it with the same hoop that I make it on. That will add to the crafty/kitschy look. I'm thinking add the backing, tack it down to the back of the hoop using first glue and then some staples to secure it. It's probably going to take two sets of hands to glue it right....and maybe some clothes pins to hold it while it's drying... The outer piece of the hoops I'm going to wrap in ribbon (probably purple) then I'll use the fastener for the hoop to create a ribbon hanger for it and cover it up with a bow or something like that.

I plan on using blues, purples, and greens in jewel tones for the projects (my favorites!) I'll probably put it up for sale, but I'm making it more for me and I'll hang it in my crafty area until it sells, or never sells. At the very least, it'll be a great show piece!

I have a lot of projects that really need to come first, and my bad wrist is acting up, so I don't expect to complete this for at least 6 months. It should take me that long to find the time to do the actual design and assemble all the pieces and do all the cross stitch.

My plan is to see if I can find paper online that is the actual size of cross stitch squares to help me to do the design work. Or maybe they'll carry it in the craft store. There have to be some good tools to do stuff like this. I can use graph paper or my bead program to create a lot of things, but it will be much simpler to create the elements to size since this is as complicated as it is. Then I can create a representation of each element, put some sticky tape on the back, and move the elements around until I'm happy with it. If anyone knows where to find the right type of paper for that, let me know!

Also - if anyone can think of any really important creative things that I should be representing - please give me your ideas!

ACK! I just realized I missed the fiber arts! Like crochet or knitting. Hmmm....I'll make a note that I need to figure out how I want to include those...

What is it about blue?

Couldn't resist doing a quick blog about this bracelet.  It combines two things I'm really wild about at the moment, the 'Picasso' lampwork beads that look like someone in the millefiori-making room has gone mad, and cobalt blue.

I haven't always liked blue so much - green used to be it for me, but I did read somewhere that it's the nation's favourite colour.  Who knows how they work that out?

Anyway, it's available in the Folksy or Dreamaid shops.  Do I want to keep it for myself?  Absolutely!

Solution: I'm off to break the habits of a lifetime and make a second one for me - belated birthday present!!

Folksy June loons - One week on

The June loons are amazing!  Not only are they listing fabulous pieces every day, they are also clocking up some impressive sales figures.  Natalie from NOfkants Curios is keeping a tally of all that, listing herself, blogging and generally being the loonies superwoman!
I'm in a monochrome mood today, so my favourite listing is this
beautiful vintage style cuff bracelet from Lonely Hearts.  Stunning, isn't it?

My listing for today was this larvakite necklace.  The camera doesn't really pick up the true beauty of these stones with their flashes of blue and white light.  They're quite like the sky yesterday when we were having a massive electrical storm!

Matching earrings are tomorrow's listing.
