How to make jewelry with everyday objects

I believe there’s creativity inside each and every one of us just like making use of everyday objects in creating jewelries. Accessories made of washers, seeds, bottle caps, can tabs, shells, buttons and many, many more are examples of everyday objects and many artisans have created great pieces from them. Today, here’s another great tutorials for a necklace, ring and bracelet, making use of everyday objects.

First one is from the stylish, chic Valley Girl, Maegan.

Rope Necklace DIY

I really love this one because it looks expensive. Would you believe that it’s only curtain tiebacks? That shiny surface of the rope adds elegance to the finish product.

Maegan is kind enough to share her tutorial and learn how to make the knot.

Another interesting accessory is this Grain’s Hand-Knotted Ring.

They’re made of old electric wire. So, don’t throw just, yet your used electric wire. You can make a ring out of it, a bracelet even or a necklace.

To make the ring you just need nose pliers, wire cutter, ring mandrel and reclaimed electric wire. Head over to ecouterre for Grain’s free tutorial.

Now, Rio Grande has made a lot of tutorials and had shared great tips. Here’s one interestingvideo tutorial on how to make a bracelet using tape measure.

In this tutorial (step by step with photos) you will learn, for example, how to bead around the pearl. It's an easy&quick project and as a result you will get these beautiful earrings!

Have fun with elastics!

I love elastic cords and my favorite is the nylon elastic string. I love making bracelets stringing beads on elastics because it’s the easiest technique for me. No need for clasps, but just a knot will do and that’s one thing I really love about using elastic cord or string.

Remember, I mentioned in one of my previous articles that I made lots of elastics bracelets for Christmas? Well, my friends, aunts and cousins love them!

Cheers for me!

And now I want to show you more designs and great ideas using elastics.

Here’s one from billie monster blog, crystal and pearl bracelet, inspired by Auntie’s Beads Karla Kam Elastic Bracelet.

Another great idea of using elastics is this elastic bookmark from Nikki and

it's such a cute idea making elastic bookmark with charms.

Love the way the charms hangs from the pages of the book “,)

Another fun and easy tutorial is a making an elastic ring and you can visit Sumo’s Sweet Stuff for her Tutorial Tuesday Elastic Ring.

Have fun with elastics everyone!

Betel Nut Beads...What are they?

I have made a couple of jewelry pieces with the Betel Nut. I thought I would do a little research about them and share it.
They are commonly known as Areca Nuts. The nuts are seeds of the Areca palm found in the tropical Pacific, Asia, and parts of east Africa.   Technically, they are not nuts, the areca is a fruit and can be found in similar forms as our typical fruits such as dried and fresh.

Believe it or not, the betel nut can be chewed wrapped in betel leaves. Hence, the Betel Nut name it is commonly known as. Why are these chewed? When the nuts are chewed, there is a stimulant effect on the person. The effect varies by person, but usually it's no more than a cup of coffee.  The fruits are found to cause many cancers in the mouth. From what I can tell, the areca are as common in Asia as peanuts or raisins for instance in the US.

When the fruit is dried, it takes on properties similar to wood. You will find in betel nut beads, a dark rippling throughout the bead. This makes each bead unique because no two fruits are the same. Beads are often dyed. These beads are incredibly strong. What I like most is that they come from nature. The person who will be wearing this bracelet and earrings will be wearing a dried fruit that could have come from the tropical forests of Asia. What a cool thing!

Below are pictures of the Areca Nuts you might find interesting. The fruit uncut, and the inside of the fruit and the trees from which they come.

Bridesmaid Jewelry Selections

There are so many details a bride must cross off of her “to do” list while planning her wedding. Some of these decisions are fun ones and others are just stressful tasks. None the less, the selection of your bridesmaids jewelry can be a stress free and fun one if you use some of these helpful hints along the way of the decision making process.

Not all of your bridesmaids are alike. They all have different personalities and that’s why you call them friends. Because of this detail, not all of their bridesmaid jewelry needs to be identical either. This is of course, a personal choice, but a unique idea of a personalized gift that your girls will appreciate. If you have brides that love drama, then a cascading chandelier earring might suit them perfectly. However, a more shy or understated bridesmaid may prefer a simple drop style earring.

If you prefer that all of your bridesmaids have a common look, there are a wealth of great options available online and in stores. Looking for a piece or pieces that are both suitable for your wedding style and colors, but that can be worn again after the wedding make for great gift giving ideas. There are a lot of trends out there this year that brides are leaning towards where bridesmaids look fantastic on their wedding day, but get to wear their jewelry again after the big moment has passed. One of these trends is teardrop or briolette jewelry. These sparkling little beauties work well for weddings, but look fantastic with a blouse and a pair of jeans as well.

Whether you pick identical pieces for your maids or select a different set for each girl’s style and personality, your bridesmaids will thank you for the thought. Jewelry is a great gift to give of thanks and a great way to be remembered as they cherish the pieces you’ve taken the time to select for them.

On a Friday Afternoon...

I'm starting a new series called "Coins around the World!" I'm really excited about it - and it's definitely going to be challenging. This is the first time I've tried to "capture" an item with beads, and it was a lot of work! I'm actually going to tear this first attempt out and re-do it (multiple reasons) but that's ok, I learned a lot!

I also wanted to show some of my recently promoted items - you know the drill - tell me your favorites and get an extra entry into my top commentators contest!

Only a Few Days Left!

Only 6 days left to buy into my Earring Club! If you love earrings - this is for you! $35 will get you a pair of earrings in the mail, every month, for the next 6 months! Doesn't that sound like a lot of fun? I'd love to add you to my list! So come check it out :)

Life's been a little crazy lately, but I've being renewing items and such lately, so I wanted to show them off! Tell me your favorite, and get an extra entry into my Top Commentators contest!

One Day at a Time...

It's been an interesting couple of weeks - but I'm getting there - one day and one hour at a time! I've managed to do some promoting and listing recently - and here's what I've done! Tell me what's YOUR favorite and get an extra entry into my Top Commentators contest :).

Lots Going On!

So much going on! I've been promoting like crazy - both for myself - and passing on the fantastic finds I see out there! Plus I have some ideas... Working to develop them but I can't let the cat out of the bag yet! Anyway, here's some of my latest items :) You know the drill, let me know your favorite and get an extra entry into the Top Commentator Contest!

Oh - and I also added some new items to my clearance section - so go check it out!

Getting stronger means...

I've been getting stronger! I haven't had an asthma attack in 3 days. Now that might not seem long to you, but the fact of the matter is that for most of the last year and a half I've had at least a minor asthma attack every single day. Which, as you can imagine, has been massively frustrating! I've had a few good periods where I temporarily got stronger, but I've always crashed again. Right now I'm trying to be hopefully that this good period is going to last! I've been gradually getting stronger over the last few weeks and I'm trying act as if its going to last. I still have bad days, but that's to be expected.

So what am I doing? Good question.

Well, don't worry, I AM trying to pace myself. I'll work for awhile and then stop and read a chapter or two in whatever book I'm on because it's just about the most relaxed I can possibly get :P

Other than that...

There are a lot of business things that kept getting put off because I just didn't have the energy. I need to catch up on entering receipts and invoices for one thing. I'm also working on doing an overhaul on my inventory. I'm going through piece by piece, checking the listings for typos, and marking which pieces I need to take more photos of. I'm also going to be re-evaluating prices on a few pieces.

Monday I got through one bag of earrings. I'm not sure how many that is (I didn't count) but I have four bags of earrings to go through! I'm glad I started this project because I found quite a few minor typos to fix!

As for crafting, I'm focusing on the baby blanket for my cousin, but I'm also working on other things from time to time. I have two custom orders to work on in the next two days, but neither of them should take me very long. I'm mostly doing the crafty stuff at night right now because I'm being all "business like" during the day :P

Oh, I'm also looking into doing more bazaars! My last one was a flop, but I have a different one (maybe two) that I'm going to try next month. At this point I'm going to try to do one or two a month and keep building up my strength and stamina.

And of course I'm still listing and promoting items on-line! In fact I have a whole bunch to show off. Tell me what your favorite pieces are (and why) to get an extra entry into my top commentators contest!

Color Explodes - Finally Done!

I've been working on this piece for over a month now - and it's finally done! I can't tell you what a relief it is to have it done! Do you ever have one of those pieces that you like, but by the time it's done, your sick of working on it? Yah, that's what this piece was for me. It was a loooong, hard road to finish this, and by the time I was done I was sick of it. Then I went to go take pictures, I fell in love again!

This piece was challenging for me for a lot of different reasons. It all started with the dichroic cabochon. I actually bought it last spring, and I made several attempts to work on it, but I had never worked with a cabochon before, and the learning process took me awhile! Plus I kept getting side-tracked with other projects. I finally sat down in August and figured out what I was doing.

Once I had the cabochon set in the seed beads, I slowly started working on the actual bracelet for it. I knew I wanted something that was free form. I've only done one other free form bracelet so far (Set Me Free) and, like the last one, I found the process of creating with a pattern to be very challenging!
Then, the last step was to create the toggle, and that was hard too! Well, actually not very hard, but it's the first time I've ever created a beaded toggle and clasp, so I was nervous. The process went really smooth though, and I really like how it turned out! I think, considering how wide the cuff is, it really needed this type of clasp.

The bracelet is 8 1/2 inches long by 1 3/4 inches wide. I'm charging $85 and you can find it in either my Artfire or my Etsy shops! I named it color explodes because it's so brightly colored, and random, it was the only thing I could think of :P

I've stayed pretty busy between creating and promoting. So as if this post isn't long enough...here's some of the other items I've promoted in the last few days!

Need to Get Ready :)

Mom and I get to do a bazaar in a just two weeks! I'm really excited! I haven't done one in a loooong time. I'm hoping it goes well. I have lot to do to get ready for it. It's a relatively new bazaar, so who knows what the sales will be like, but we figured we'd give it a try since they invited us. If we do well sales-wise, then we'll sign up for some more in the next few months.

Things I need to do:
~ Try to excercise a little each day to make sure I'm strong enough for the bazaar.
~ Double check my prices, make some adjustments to my charms prices...
~ Catch up on my photography so I can tag everything to be sold.
~ Reorganize my necklaces so they are easier to pull out to display.
~ Set up my display and figure out what I need to make adjustments on.
~ Buy anything I need for the displays.

I'm so excited and nervous at the same time!

In the mean time...here's some of my latest items promoted from my shop and my Mom's shop! :) Which is your favorite? Tell me and get an extra entry in my top commentators contest!

So Many Ideas!

I'm in one of those places again where I have WAY to many ideas to keep up with! Good thing Sharla just got me a new notebook huh? Right now I have plans for two strung necklaces, one hemp necklce, I'm working on a bead woven bracelet, I have plans for another woven necklace, I have a cabochon that I started playing with and want to finish, and I'm going to be buying a new beading program so that I can do some new design work and work out a piece that's been rattling around my brain for a few weeks now! *whew* Oh and I have a few ideas for woven earrings too!

And THAT is just the jewelry :P As you'll see when I do my Crafty ADD post - my blanket for my cousins baby is coming along nicely. I have ideas rattling around my head for future baby things I'd like to mke too... And I have ideas for several bookmarks!

Mom and I were watching this show called "She's Crafty" the other day. I think it's a local show...but it's this young woman who does all sorts of wacky craft projects. She specializes in repurposing items and "going green." Some of what she did on the episode I watched was kinda interesting, there was one project that Mom and I both agreed we could to better, and it left us both wondering how much I'd get done if I actually was healthy and energy again :P There are a lot of projects I'd never attempt right now because it simply involves too much moving around! I'd never be Martha Stewart (can't stand her style for one thing) but I'd definitely have a bunch of fun :P

Oh well, I do have fun with what I can create here and now, and it's no good to just sit and wonder "what if?" right?

Speaking of what I can create - here's the latest items promoted from my shops! Leave a comment on what's your favorite and get an extra entry into the Top Commentators contest!

Sorry...

Today's post is short and sweet. My migraine is really bad today. So I'm just doing an update on my lastest listings :) Tell me your favorite and get an extra entry into my top commentators contest!

Bead Weaving and some New Stuff :)

Ok, so I actually made this about two weeks ago, but I couldn't show it off because it was a surprise present and she reads this blog! I got the darling pattern out of a book, so it's not something I can sell in my shop, but I had a lot of fun making it anyway :D It's my first 3-D beaded project :D

Oh wait, I did some cubes once, but those barely count :P

Also wanted to show off the newest items promoted in my three shops from this last week :) Leave a comment about your favorite and get an extra point in the Top Commentators contest - and remember that this month there's an extra prize!

Weekly Special and New Items!

I used my favorite hemp knotting technique with this bracelet to form a spiraling pattern in between the beads. The black hemp forms a perfect contrast to the blue/green pony beads, for a look that will jazz up any outfit with a bit of fun! This bracelet is just barely over 6 inches long.

Normally $7 plus S&H, this week, on this blog, you can buy this bracelet for only $5.60 plus $2 shipping and handling to anywhere in the world!

I also have to show off some of my most recent listings - I've been keeping busy as always!

Which is YOUR favorite?

Which is Your Favorite Piece?

Now that byhand.me has their spotlights fixed - it's time to do a run down on some of my most recent listings or relistings! Which is your favorite piece? Leave me a comment and let me know! All comments about what piece you like will earn you TWO entries into my monthly top commentator contest!
