Finding Charm Featured on The Handmade Gift Guide
I was elated to read that I got featured on the Handmade Gift Guide. This is such a wonderful place to support handmade. I'm transitioning most of my gift giving to handmade and proud to do so!
You too can get featured on The Handmade Gift Guide as well. This link will take you to the Guide and the process of submitting your shop for consideration.
Betel Nut Beads...What are they?
They are commonly known as Areca Nuts. The nuts are seeds of the Areca palm found in the tropical Pacific, Asia, and parts of east Africa. Technically, they are not nuts, the areca is a fruit and can be found in similar forms as our typical fruits such as dried and fresh.
Believe it or not, the betel nut can be chewed wrapped in betel leaves. Hence, the Betel Nut name it is commonly known as. Why are these chewed? When the nuts are chewed, there is a stimulant effect on the person. The effect varies by person, but usually it's no more than a cup of coffee. The fruits are found to cause many cancers in the mouth. From what I can tell, the areca are as common in Asia as peanuts or raisins for instance in the US.
Below are pictures of the Areca Nuts you might find interesting. The fruit uncut, and the inside of the fruit and the trees from which they come.

Finding Charm
I started making jewelry because I had outfits I just couldn't find that perfect piece to go with. So I thought I'd buy some beads and give it a try. I was hooked, it's almost an addiction! It's important to me that I create charming pieces that don't break the bank. I started getting compliments and requests and decided I should help others in their journey of finding charm.

EtsyBloggers: June 18 Blog Carnival
Carnival Topic: What are your goals? Short term, long term? It's up to you.
Host: RainyDayArt
Blog: http://rainydayart.blogspot.com
Blog: http://rainydayart.blogspot.com
I have a very important short term goal involving my Etsy shop and that is optimizing it. I'm getting the hang of promotion and the whole selling a good online. Now I'm wanting to utilize all the tools that I can that will help me free up some time for myself and fun things and not tied to the computer. I have had a lot of my items that are expiring. Seems to go in spurts for some reason. As I renew, I also take a look at what keywords I have used in the keyword section, item description and title. I've been utilizing the Google Keyword Tool to help me. It's too soon yet to see if I can see a difference since sites aren't crawled everyday, but I can tell my views are up slightly. And I feel good at what I'm doing. It helps that I have a marketing background. I know in the long run, having optimized listings will do some of the work for me as well. As I list new items, they're going up optimized. I've got under 100 to go. Man oh man!
Another big goal was to figure out how to get my items to tweet and post to Facebook without me having to do it manually. I thought there just has to be something out there that will do it. I know some already figured it out, but I still consider myself new at all this. Hasn't been a year yet. I found Twaitter and finally decided to try Hootsuite. At the time, Twaitter didn't support FB postings, and now it's developed a program to do that. But it has helped free up a lot of time for me and also time to actually tweet with others and check out what other people are doing. Plus, being that I work full time, it was hard to compete. Now it's like I'm working during the day without having to do everything manually except for my RTs of others. I've made a sale already from the auto tweets and I have wonderful followers who support by RTing as well. If you retweet me, I retweet you back.
The next goal I have for my shop is to try more paid advertising online. I'd like to try some content ads instead of the adwords. I tried some project wonderful ads, and didn't find that I could get it to work for me. I tried it for a month tweaking it everyday. I'm still trying to figure out where my customers are coming from. I'm getting enough sales now that I'm seeing some trends, but not enough yet to do any moderate investing. I hope by end of the year I'll have found a good online advertising mix.
Etsy Blogger of the Month: Handmade by Sandi
This girl knows how to celebrate! Her birthday is this month and she is celebrating by offering 50% off everything in her shop! She has a variety of items in her shop. My favorite are her Boo Boo Bunny's. Sometimes the boo boo isn't that bad, but it sure helps the calming process to give you child a little something to make it all feel better.
Now while the kid is nursing his or her wounds, mom can sit back and have a margarita. Cute little charm earrings.
At Handmade by Sandi, she's got all your birthday and holiday gifts covered. I find that teachers would be especially grateful to one of her crochet items. Here are other great gift ideas that you can peruse at your leisure.

EtsyBloggers: May 10 Carnival
This month's blog carnival is hosted by Made by Melissa.
Topic: What is your favorite material to work with and why? i.e. glass beads, wool yarn, acrylic paint, organic fabric... Show pictures of completed projects using this material.
I have grown fond of all beads Jasper. I just love all the different varieties. I have worked with red and teal paisley. The teal paisley I found in a small shop and I just fell in love and just had to have them. Silly me though, I haven't kept any of the pieces I've made them with. Both of these items are sold, but they're some of my favorites. I like that each piece is so natural and each one is different. I can buy a strand of red jasper, and not one bead is identical. I like the earthy feel and they can go with just about any bead. I've worked with polished jasper and they're so smooth and soft. This website is very interesting and tells a little more about the beauty and meaning of jasper.

Beautiful Blogger Award
I was surprised to learn that I have received the Beautiful Blogger Award from Honor Crowned Creativity. I think this is a creative award because it's not just about the blog, but about the person who blogs.I get to pass the Beautiful Blogger Award on to other fabulous bloggers. There are two rules when given the award. I tell you 7 things about me & choose 7 blogs to receive the award.
7 Things about me!
1. I love cars. I think they're an expression of who we are. With that, I name all of my cars. When I was sixteen I shared the family car which was blue, so I called her Blue Belle. Then I got a maroon car I called Cherry Blossom. Then I had a jade colored car, named her the obvious, Jade. And then my latest is Gus. I drive a black Pontiac Aztec and it took me a few weeks, and all of a sudden, it stuck. I call it the identity crisis car. I thought they were ugly, still do, but when you get inside you forget that ugly box you're driving. I refer to him as a person. I'll tell someone "I'm taking Gus to the shop for an oil change." A little odd I know. But sometimes cars have personalities too! Please don't report me to the loony bin!
2. I'm originally from Kansas City, Mo. About a year and a half ago, I moved down to Dallas, Tx. I came by myself and knowing no one. I moved for a job. I'm told all the time that I was brave to do that. I'm a little too independent for my own good sometimes. I love Dallas, and I'm glad I finally got the chance to live here. But I know I'll end up back home. Miss the Midwest and their way of life.
3. I am enamored with the sea. Went sailing once with what I now call the renegade cowboy sailor. Sailed from Miami heading to Nantucket. Only made it to Savannah, GA. The steering broke and I was not happy with the guy taking us out over 250 miles into the gulf stream. Huge Freighter radioed us and cussed us out for being on such a small boat too far out to sea. I knew then, I was in trouble. Didn't help that I got tossed around the cabin and went head first into the stove and split my nose open the first 2 minutes out to sea. Now I have the scar to remind me of my crazy adventure every day.
4. I wanted to be an orthopedic surgeon since late grade school. I wanted to help people like my dad who had trouble with their joints and back. But then I couldn't get through my first month of physics in highschool. At the same time, I was excelling in a position on the school newspaper as advertising director. I was recommended for the job. I won an award at the Missouri State Competition. So before I knew it. I dropped Physics and added more journalism courses and switched to advertising/marketing as my profession. I even won a scholarship in a late students name. What an honor and I think of it often. So here I am now, a marketing manager.
5. I love to read. Some of my fun reads are John Grisham and Patricia Cornwell. Like a good mystery. Makes me think and I like that. My shameless obsession is Danielle Steel. So much fun. And yes, I even cry sometimes. I've been known to throw a book too when I was done. But my literary favorite is Edith Wharton. She wrote the Age of Innocence and Ethan Fromme. Her writing is full of symbolism and expressing the dynamics of women and men. She's a classic and I recommend her. She's a 1900's turn of the century author.
6. I was a nanny for 6 kids for 11 years. I was brought on board when baby number 4 was to be born. The oldest siblings were 3, 2, 1. I stuck around for 3 more babies! I'm extremely close to all of them. I think since I was able to get my bluff in them at such an early age I'm not exactly a babysitter. They have said I'm like a mom, but much cooler. I thought that was funny. Veronica 15, Sean 14, Molly 13, Jack 11, Jamie 9, and Vaughn 7. I would say I'm a patient person. And what's important to me is that they still talk to me and now it's the bigger important things in life for the older ones, but they feel comfortable enough because "I remember what it was like to be a kid." That means a lot to me. The 3 younger ones are so attached to me. When I go up for visits there's a big fight on who spends time with me first. It's so nice to feel loved. I adore each and every one of them and they keep me grounded.
7. I'll keep this one short because I can go on and on with details. I went sailing once from Miami to Nantucket. But the steering broke some 250 miles off the coast of Georgia. We were able to jimmy rig an elbow like thing to the main steering column below the floor. I steered that boat 250 miles to Georgia, while the "skipper" slept down below. Took us 2 days to get to shore. We anchored in Savannah, and I got on the first plane out.
The Seven Bloggers I am awarding the Beautiful Blogger Award to Are:
2. Dean Designs
4. Elle's Beads
6. PepperPi
EtsyBloggers: April 23 Carnival
This month's Carnival topic is presented by: http://joeyandaleethea.com/blog
"4/23 is my birthday!! Tell us your birthday and what astrological sign you are.
Do you ever read/follow your horoscope?"
My birthday is February 10, making me an Aquarius. My personality is that much like an Aquarian. I read my horoscope on Facebook, or my mom, who is very cosmic and astrology savvy, will occasionally read and send me my horoscope. They are usually pretty on target. I enjoy reading and hearing them.
I found more information about Aquarians here but I copies the information below. You can also find more information about your sign there as well.
THE Zodiacal Sign of Aquarius commences on January 21st, but for seven days, being overlapped by the "cusp" of the previous sign, it does not come into full power until on or about January 28th. From this date onward it can not take its full strength until February 19th and is then for seven days gradually losing its strength on account of becoming overlapped by the "cusp" of the incoming sign Pisces. Those born people who were born in such "cusp" usually take from the qualities of both signs. These natures generally tend to feel very lonely in life. They are over-sensitive, and easily wounded in their feelings. AQUARIANS have great desire for material gain, but are not greedy. They are tireless workers and are willing to work for what they want, and do not demand more than their fair share. They read character instinctively, and for this reason they "see through" people too easily to be really happy.
People who were born in February are not demonstrative in affection, but feel very deeply.
They are usually high-strung, and their nerves are generally overwrought. This people often lose control and then say or do things that they bitterly regret later.
They are generally very active for the public good, and often give all they have to relieve the distress of others.
They are good thinkers, and are very successful when it comes to debate and argument, and difficult to convince.
They are excellent in business and finance when they apply their minds to such things, but usually they are more successful for others, and make more money for other people than for themselves. Such people are a seekers of knowledge, rational, open-minded, gifted with breadth of vision.
If people born in this sign manage overcame their sensitiveness and developed their will-power, there is no position they would not be able to attain. They are usually successful in some large sphere of action, where they can feel their responsibilities for others. As an idealist AQUARIANS would like to see that everybody is happy and their ambition is to do something important and meaningful.
They take a great interest in public meetings, gatherings of people, and public ceremonies. In spite of the fact that such people love theatres and concerts, and like to be where crowds of people congregate, they often feel lonely.
If born with money, these people rarely show who they are. They are inclined to let their opportunities slip, or realize them only when it is too late. If, however, people born in this period belong to the lower order of humanity they inclined to lose all sense of honor and principle, and are extremely unreliable, tricky in money matters, dishonest, and unscrupulous in gaining what they desire.
As a lovers these people are full of surprises. They simply cannot be happy or fulfilled unless they are free to do as they like. No matter how deeply in love these people may be, they are never willing to sacrifice their autonomy, but they always put honesty ahead of romance.
In general, it is not true that all people who were born in this time are evil people. In fact, those with the Sun in Aquarius are sometimes «one set against many» against great odds or against an institution; for light are at enmity with darkness in the same way that lions are at enmity with hyenas.

Aquarius - The Sign of the Water Bearer
The Aquarias' symbol is the man, who is holding two vessels in his hands : one contains alive water , another - dead. It symbolises the division between good and evil, black and white. It is in the Aquarias' nature to be interested in science's advanced achievements. For example - computers. In general ,he loves to use any modern technical achievements. Sometimes, he shows such a great interest in them, that they can replace contact with people at all. The inner world of people who were born under the sign of The Aquarias is very unstable. There are rather frequently the revolutions take place. That is why these people are usually moody . Though the Aquarias loves everything new he can find there something old . Friends
They tend to collect friends the way some people put together an art collection. The typical AQUARIAN may have so many friends, but very few confidants. In real friendship or love they get on best with those born from May 21 to June 20, October 20 to 27, and, as a rule, with those who were born in November. Health
These people are inclined to suffer most from the stomach, often through the nerves of the stomach in some peculiar manner that is difficult to relieve with ordinary medicine. Bad circulation often troubles them and there is often some delicacy of the eyes. Color
The most favorable colors for them are all shades of what are known as "electric shades," as electric blues and electric grays. Stones
The birth stones for the period are sapphires, pink topazes, and moonstones.
Featured Crafter: Monika Designs
It just so happens to be a coincidence that Monika would be my featured crafter this week. I happened to win a set of 4 crochet coasters from her shop earlier this week. She ran the giveaway on her Facebook Fan Page. I keep going back and forth on which ones I want. I'm giving myself til the end of the day to make a decision. I just can't decide, living room, bedroom, guest room...decisions, decisions.
Monika Designs products have been featured on the Etsy Frontpage numerous times and she is always selling. Even since last night when I was narrowing my list, I see that coasters have already sold! I was teasing her about making a fruit basket after she made strawberries for a custom order. You will also find cute little owl coasters, flowers and trees. Not only does she make delicious coasters, her crochet is not limited to just that. She also crochets bath/bathroom and kitchen products as well such as bath puffs, potholders and washcloths.
I also follow Monika Designs on Twitter. She is a great supporter of the handmade and helps all us fellow crafters out. Please, follow this positive, upbeat lady.

Marketing Tip of the Week - Facebook Vanity URL
When you have at least 25 fans you can change your facebook fan page to what they call a "Vanity Url". When you first create your facebook fan page it's a long jumbled up string of letters/numbers and your business name. Some of you may still be using this long name and have 100's of fans at this point...here's what you can do...
********************
Click on this link - http://facebook.com/username - at the bottom of that page you will see this link - Set a username for your Pages - click on that then you will see a drop down and when you click the drop down you should see your ' business fan page'. I actually created two by accident so I picked the one that had already started getting a few fans - at that point you should have a chance to just put in the name (with or without spaces) or any form of upper/lower case you want) and check the availability. At that point you make the big 'commit' and you can't go back. At that point this long url (I've made this up) - http://www.facebook.com/pages/Berkeley-CA/A-Slice-Of-Delight/20800345155?v=wall#/pages/Berkeley-CA/A-Slice-Of-Delight /20800345155?ref=ts will get to be www.facebook.com/asliceofdelight (if that's how you want it) - It doesn't change the name of the page title (which may have spaces) but this gets the url down to something nice and manageable
Now the URL is nice and simple and can easily be put on a business card or any other place you want it posted/tweeted/promoted/etsy/blog/website/etc..
Featured Crafter: One Boy One Girl
I met One Boy One Girl on Twitter. She had just recently opened her Etsy shop back in November, 2009. I fell in love with a little girl outfit in her shop and included it in my very first treasury.
Eco Friendly Organic Trees in Green Bling Rhinestud Shirt and Lounge Pants
She has a wide variety of darling bling t-shirts, mommy and me aprons, ornaments and now including adult bling wear! All of her items are one of a kind (ooak). If you have a little girl, One Boy One Girl is a must to follow!
You can find her on the web: Twitter, Facebook, and Blogspot. You can find a full line of her bling and things at her website. There you will find sizing charts and color charts for the rhinestuds.
I hope you enjoy window shopping!
Necklace Chosen for Tivoli DesignsTreasury!
Please go and see the treasury that Tivoli Designs created. My gold beaded necklace that can be worn two ways was choosen. What a great honor. A great way to start the day.
Charm of the Week: Fun Rainbow Dangle Anklet
I love bright, lively colored jewelry pieces. Especially when the outfit allows it to pop! This anklet is to make sure to make your pedicure do the same. A mixture of frosted glass beads and bright rainbow e beads are used. And I love the starburst spacers I found. I think they really add a lot of sparkle to the anklet. The rings dance around your ankle. I hope you enjoy!
Featured Crafter: Woolcrazy
Whenever I need a 'pickme up', I'll go to Woolcrazy. I just love her owls' adorable faces. They make me smile. I'm in love! It's hard to pick a favorite one, so all of them are my favorites. I also like her other critters like the bunny, penguins and the chick. I had no idea you could do all that with fibers. It's an enviable talent.
One of her cuddly penguins, Percy, goes on fabulous adventures. You can follow Percy on Twitter and also read about his travels. I hope one day, I'll run into Percy.
Woolcrazy is also good at posting videos she comes across for felted wool projects and other crafting projects. So not only does she felt the critters, she also is informative. I also like that she is environmentally sound and uses recycled fibers as well in her creations. Please become a fan on Facebook of Woolcrazy with me. You'll have a blast.
