Hello crafters! I have been going gaga over knotting. Seeing my mother’s old magazine about Macramé, it inspires me to make an accessory using knotting techniques and I am going to share my favorite knotting technique, the hemp knot.
Just a trivia, Macramé is a form of textile-making using knotting techniques.Actually, hemp or abaca in the Philippines is not a type of knot, but one of the common materials used in macramé,
which is a soft durable fiber cultivated from plants of the Cannabis genus for commercial use.
Over the years, hemp jewelry is produced from knotting hemp twine through the practice of macramé; hence, the word hemp knot is derived.
I have learned about hemp knotting from my mother when I was still a kid. I remember I used to wear a belt that my mother gave me that she created using macramé technique. The belt has been long gone and I’ve almost forgotten on how to tie a hemp knot but something wonderful happened. As I was trying to recall how to tie a hemp knot, I was able to create a choker.
Cheers!
Introducing, my handmade Buttoned Choker!
Instead of using hemp twine, I created this is choker from round leather cords with a flower button that serves as the focal bead.
Originally, my plan is to create a bracelet, but since my wrist is too small and I wanted to clearly show the hemp knots I decided to create a choker instead.
I added basic braiding techniques to the hemp knots to create texture and made the hemp knots as the focal piece along with the flower button.
A simple piece, yet, funky and stylish.
